What a beautiful surprise! This book was just what I needed: a fairy tale inspired story with a comforting message and a nice writing style.
There is a Q&A with the author at the end of my copy where it's written that the message readers should take from the story is "that life is full of joy and sorrow, loneliness and companionship, pride and regret. To live means experiencing it all." That summs up some of what the main character goes through.
In this world there are people called Yaga that live in houses with chicken legs and guide the dead to the stars. Marinka, the main character, lives with Baba (her grandmother) in one of those houses and she is in training to become her Yaga against her will. Marinka dreams of being with the living and exploring, but her life doesn't let her since Yagas are supposed to be careful around the living since they live in hiding.
This story gave me the same feeling of the movie "Kiki's Delivery Service", even though the plots are very different. The experiences the main characters go through while meeting different people are similar though.
Marinka can be frustrating at times, but I kept reminding myself that she is very young and I ended up enjoying the character even though she behaved selfishly very often and kept making mistakes. That is part of growing up and ultimately she had good in her. The characters around Marinka were pretty interesting too, but she was the most well developed. The book is told in first person, which also makes the reader feel closer to the main character than the others around them.
I really enjoyed this book, but sometimes I was taken out of the story because I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to buy things like no one ever saw these houses move around before. This being a middle grade book also means that it has some resolutions at the end that were too easily solved even though it seemed a huge problem before. Those are my only complains. Otherwise, the book is wonderful and even what I wasn't as happy with I understand it is part of the target audience the story is meant for.
I really want to read more books by this author because all of them seem to be inspired by fairy tales and folklore and I crave those types of stories.

‘Every muscle in my body shudders and tears pour down my tight, screwed-up face. The house sways gently, as if it wants to rock me to sleep. I feel the balustrade wrap around my shoulders in a stiff wooden hug and the spindles pat me gently. I entwine my arms through the balustrade, and hug the house back’

The book was not quite what I expected but I still did enjoy it. I think, for me, it dragged a little in the middle but I really like the ending
A MUCH nicer Baba Yaga than I have ever seen, but really cute and creative. I love the idea of a child growing up in a partially sentient house on chicken legs.
It's book about 12 years old Marinka who wants to have a normal life and friends because it's impossible when your house has chicken legs and constantly move around the world. Furthermore each night girl celebrate with dead because her grandmother helps them pass to the afterlife. So when the opportunity to have a friend appeared Marinka broke all rules...but her grandmother disappeared. Marinka try to find her and bring her life back to normal in Yaga's standard.
I finished "The House with Chicken Legs" yesterday and my first thought was "Marinka is so annoying, irresponsible, selfish girl who starts crying when because of her, everything is falling apart". I don't like her. The best character for me was 'Old Yaga' who was a sweet old lady with passion for chemistry. I really like Yaga's family idea whom are spread around the world and help the dead pass on the other side.
This book atmosphere is adorable and so warm. Furthermore it was funny, especially when you observed the personality of the Chicken House. From other hand it was moving but I don't want to spoil anything.
For me it was really good fantasy retailing of the tale of Baba Yaga with Russian folklore vibes.

Marinka próbuje ją odszukać i przywrócić swoje życie do normy według standardów Jagów.

The main character is extremly annoying, she's twelve and can be unresonable. What I realli liked, however is the worldbuidling, the Jaga's world, Jagas' themselves and the House. Oh, the House is the true main character of this story!
