A really enjoyable story. I was nearly finished before I realized I was reading the abridged version. I would be interested in reading the full version sometime.
The first part of this book was amazing. I loved it. Once Dantes escaped and found the treasure, though, I just wasn’t as invested in the story. Overall I liked it but I wish it had been a bit more gripping. 3.8/5

Oh no.
Ok, I'm a little torn on this. When I read this book the first time (2009ish?), I read the unabridged 1200 page version and I remember enjoying it--despite the length. This time, I read an abridged version (which I didn't realize because the cover says nothing about it being abridged) and was mostly enjoying it until the end. So...is it fair of me to knock this down to 3 stars even though I didn't read the full-length version??
Well, my vote is yes because the end is what soured me on it and surely the end is the same in both versions. It's a toss up between which conclusion I hated more--Albert and Mercedes' getting dealt a terrible hand OR the Count just frolicking off into the sunset with SIXTEEN YEAR OLD Haydee. Like, no. What are we doing here??
Still love the vengeance aspect of the story though.

I was NAMED after a character from this novel, and I still don't think it's all that great.
Oh! It's as classic as you can desire any story to be. The story of the biblical fall and rise of Edmond Dantes, the vengeance simmered over years, culminating in the carefully planned revenge makes the plot enduring. I can imagine why this book is still so popular after almost two centuries since it was originally published.
While some ideas in the book might seem dated to present-day readers, the underlying emotions and intent are only too universal to be forgotten and resonate with the modern readers too.
