I cannot recall a single book that has ever made me break down and cry multiple times within the first few pages. Never have I felt so seen by an author whom I will never have a chance to meet. I'm so thankful this book exists.

This book was heart-breaking and introspective and honestly a must-read for anyone wanting insight into a part of the queer community that isn't talked about often. A look back at butch history through the eyes of a flawed, real, human narrator.

Wow, what a devastating and hopeful book. Feinberg depicts the horror of growing up visibly different in a society that responds to difference with immense violence. Feinberg also writes of the comfort and love within community found in gay bars in Buffalo.

I can't believe it took me so long to finally read this foundational queer text. There's so much in it that is  relevant to today, and Feinberg writes of the contradictions and joys and pains of queerness with such honesty.

This was a life changing read for me. I couldn’t put it down. If you’re queer and going through a rough time, I’d think twice about reading this book.

This was a deeply affirming read, especially as a trans person living in the UK, faced with increasing transphobia and a government and press that is trying to turn the British public against myself and my loved ones. It was dark, horrifying at points but equally so full of love and queer community, chosen family and introspection that I sobbed. I cried on the bus to work, on the bus back from work, in bed, at work, during my lunch break, on the overground - I pretty much sobbed every time I picked it up.
