This was a life changing read for me. I couldn’t put it down. If you’re queer and going through a rough time, I’d think twice about reading this book.
This was a deeply affirming read, especially as a trans person living in the UK, faced with increasing transphobia and a government and press that is trying to turn the British public against myself and my loved ones. It was dark, horrifying at points but equally so full of love and queer community, chosen family and introspection that I sobbed. I cried on the bus to work, on the bus back from work, in bed, at work, during my lunch break, on the overground - I pretty much sobbed every time I picked it up.

This book taught me so much about queer history, which has largely been absent from my life. Through Leslie Feinberg, I learned about lesbian stereotypes and experiences that blew my mind and made me reflect on how much progress and change have been made in society. It gave me a new perspective own experiences and made me think of queer people today that are left behind or out of certain conversations.
I felt sick to my stomach a few times while reading, knowing that these are real stories and events from Leslie Feinberg's life. I am grateful that she shared her love, loss, and bravery with the world.
I also loved the political activism and labor rights aspects.
I loved this book, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished. I sometimes wonder about what happened the rest of "Jess Goldberg"'s life - like did she find love again? Does she know what happened to her family? What does she think of how the transgender community has changed in the 21st century? I could go on and on.

First off, I'd like to acknowledge this book for what it is; a step forward in gender equality and understanding, a much needed view in to the difficult life of being "other"--of not fitting in with the social norm, and it's a beacon of hope to those who are struggling with their own sense of identity.
I liked the story, I feel that this needed to be written about. More books about this type of material need to be written and shared. I also think that this book wasn't that well written and that took me out of the story at times. The messages are good, the delivery is a little lacking to the point for me where it was distracting. I would have given one more star had this book been a little better composed.
