What a writer! Such an engaging writing style and voice. I wish I coulda given it 5 stars … But by the second half, the author’s self-loathing was getting uncomfortable. I mean, I’m all for a dose of self-deprecating humour, but it felt like more than good-natured ribbing turned inward. It felt like outta control emotional self-harm in extreme close-up. The tragedy of it kinda made my stomach churn.
I really want to read her more recent book, and likely will. She’s observant and insightful and original and FUNNY! Oh, and her illustrations are BANG ON. But I do hope The Real Her actually likes herself a more than her stories suggest.

I've had a soft spot for these stories since they were blog entries. Honest in a charmingly blunt way.

3.5 stars.
Meh. It was okay, not as good as I was expecting it to be.
The book starts off really silly but gets progressively better towards the end. Or maybe I just got used to the silliness before the end.
The main problem I have with the book is that it tries too hard. The author tries to explain each and every small behavioural trait that she or her dogs have and desperately tries to make them funny. Most of the time the jokes fall flat, but once in a while, they hit home and when they do, they hit hard.
In summary, silly above average book that is hilarious in parts and daft in others.

I love Allie's blog, and true to form I loved her book. I'm so glad she published it!
Her writing on what depression feels like is amazing and, for me, spot-on. Her stories about the Simple Dog are extra funny now that I have my own special dog. And of course there's her artwork. I love it!

Parts about the dogs were funny. Lots of the personal stuff was intended to be written in an amusing way, but I felt sad for how much she clearly struggles with her mental health and the complicated sides of ADHD, like impulsive thinking and rejection sensitivity. The self-judgement over her impulsive thinking and intrusive thoughts was sad.
