fantastic. i guess this is a sort of prequel to the actual Fables series. i'm a sucker for origin stories, so this fit the bill nicely. gorgeous artwork by the likes of John Bolton, etc.

I felt like this wasn't as well written as the earlier issues. I'm hoping it picks up soon. Maybe I just don't like the wooden people...

Good enough. Of course, one would think there'd more about Arabian fables. One would be wrong.

As always, brilliant. Fables is truly outstanding.

Basically a way to show how the Adversary is taking over the Homelands. They talked about the Arabian worlds in the last volume and this is the way to bring Sinbad and Aladdin in to the mix? I guess.. pretty lame though. And perpetuates quite a few stereotypes.

An entertaining diversion in the epic plot that Homelands began in full force, and subtle commentary on world events. Beautifully drawn, with a whole new cast of characters, broadening the fables beyond the European ones we are typically so familiar with.

I've been working my way through this series slowly and have mostly been entertained. I love the concept of fairy tale characters from different stories interacting with each other. But. This was probably the worst volume for me so far. I've seen a few reviews on GR point this out (but not many): the portrayal of the fables from the Arabian homeland. It was stereotypical and honestly just downright offensive in its jokes about the language barrier. I feel like there was an opportunity here for this to be a much more interesting and deeper arc. Because problems aside, it was also quite boring. I may continue it since I enjoy some elements, but my expectations will be pretty low going forward.

adventurous dark funny mysterious fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

I enjoyed the second arc (with the wooden lovers) more than the Arabian arc. It was a little too short and wrapped up too neatly.

Also I miss Bigby.
