Will totally be reading this to sweet sixth graders about to head across the street to junior high! Love it.

I loved the ultimate message and I thought the illustrations were super cute and expressive. However, I don't really love how it pigeonholes (pun intended) types of people in the first 2/3 of the book. It's very much about how "cool" kids=bullies and "nerds"=glasses-wearing, book-loving, allergy-having weaklings.

Nerdy bird shows that it's not always important to be part of a clique. Well said nerdy bird, well said.
(I adore the Whovian and Trekkie birds.)

Hahaha a great lesson for children about how if you get ostracized for being a nerd, there are plenty of other nerds who will be your friend! And then if it turns out the nerds are *also* cliquey and misogynist, dump them and hang out with the friendly goth bird instead!

So many of my friends need this in their lives and on their kids bookshelves. For every nerd who just wanted some friends, felt alone and just wanted to be you without feeling bad about who or what you like, this is the book for you and your kids! Heck, I want this on my book shelf!!!

Midway through Nerdy Birdy, by Aaron Reynolds, I thought I had the story all figured out. I was fairly certain that the lesson of this story was going to be that you don't need to worry about the cool kids not thinking you're cool because there are many more uncool kids and you'll find your place with your own people. I was prepared to give it a three-star rating - even when considering the fantastic illustrations. Then, Mr. Reynolds gave the story a terrific twist.

Nerdy Birdy doesn't fit in with the "cool birdies" (Eagle, Robin, Cardinal) and feels lonely until a group of other Nerdy Birdies welcomes him to their flock. When Vulture comes to town, she also feels lonely and Nerdy Birdy wants to invite her to the flock, but the rest aren't so sure.

A sweet book about finding friendship in unlikely places and how to help others feel welcome. The "cool birdies" add a little humor to the book, but could also be seen as a little overdone and a bit bully-ish.

I absolutely loved this. Great messaging about gatekeeping and acceptance.
