SO GREAT. The chapter on the ghants was utterly brilliant.

I gave books 1 and 2 four stars, and the first part of book 3 five stars. I’m excited to see what I think of the finale, and also whether if the book was one large tome, would I be as impressed.

I can only rate what’s in front of me and this book didn’t let up. Relentless for a high fantasy novel, there was little wasted movement, it’s like Williams has hit his stride and now he’s built his house of cards, he can knock it down with gleeful abandon.

A rather unusually small amount of Binabik in this novel, which made me sad, but I am fascinated by the Sithi, even if most of the prophecies and the conclusion is still yet to be determined and realised. He’s making you work for your climax, and that’s a good thing.

I feel like this whole saga so far has been luxurious, the stately feel of a truly luxury product. Delving into and exploring this land of Osten Ard with who is clearly and absolute master of his craft. This is truly exceptional storytelling, and yes it is wordy, but I am here for it.

Can’t wait to get myself sat down and strapped in for the final book!

5 stars for this final book, and 5 stars for this series for overall.

First my gripes: the ending seemed too contrite. I’ve spent weeks and weeks and read enough pages to restock a forest and then within 60 pages everything is explained and wrapped up. It’s almost as though he’s finished writing all of his epic scenes and now wants to move on to his next project. I could have spent a few hundred more pages with this to end. The whole series is luxurious, like treating yourself to your favourite treat. On a weekday. With no work. In the bath. So for it to lose that luxury at the end to just finish like it did was a little jarring.

It’s testament to this series that was overlong and bloated that I was wishing for several hundred more bloated and overlong pages. Take that whichever way you feel like it fits.

My, this series ended strong though. Everything that it built towards was epic and sensational and fantastical. From page 1 to page 796 I was engrossed, enjoying the dips in pace to catch breath and then get stuck in and flying again.

I cannot recommend this series enough. I will read The Heart of What Was Lost immediately, and then I’ll consider moving on to other things before I read Brothers of the Wind, and then dive into the sequel series. I want to give it the time it deserves, and I want to come to it ready to be as absorbed as I was with this. I can’t rush it and I won’t.

Once again, I can’t recommend this series enough. Just go and read it.
