A fun and diverting insight into the making of Sense & Sensibility - Emma Thompson screenplay is genius and her diaries at the end of the book from film shoot are hilarious, insightful and show just how draining and complicated it is making a film. I have no idea how one ever manages it. Her diaries swing from lunch details, alcohol consumed and the cast and crews various injuries, illnesses and general sleep deprivation to some charming insights into the cast (Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman of course all pop up) and little nuggets of conversation. With regards to her acting Thompson is brief and self-deprecating, praising her co-actors and lamenting how awful (and tired) she is. Which seems very sweet considering how great she is in the film.

My favourite exchange was definitely:

Kate: 'Oh God, my knickers have gone up my arse.'
Alan: 'Ah. Feminine mystique strikes again.'

I had originally got this book with the intentions of only reading the diary section of the book, however I was quickly swept in to the screenplay and read that as well. I highly reccomend this for the lovers of both the movie and the novel - and people that liked Bridget Jones. Emma's wit is very similar to hers!

Funny, well-written and interesting look behind the scenes of a favorite film of mine.

As someone working in the creative industries I resonate with Emma Thompson’s reflection about film making:

“The beginning of a film is like watching a huge newborn centipede trying to get up on its hundred legs and go for a walk. Keeps tripping up until it’s worked out how to coordinate. Any film will take two to three weeks to get into its stride - some never do. I think the key is good communications.”

Supremely interested in having Emma Thompson content injected into my mind and soul at high quantities at all times, thank you. Filmmaking is a nightmare, huh? We are extremely fortunate that she kept this diary because it is a goldmine.

Tbh I mostly read Sense & Sensibility so I could read this after. (I was gonna get to it eventually...)

Our girl Emma wrote this book that would be my choice for a sickbed comfort. From sheep with so much wool it's dangerous for them to run around too long to actors' digestive troubles. Happy sigh.

Fun romp along with Emma Thompson during the filming of Sense & Sensibility.  The movie was Thompson's first screenplay and it's fun to see the beloved book take form in stage  and scene directions.  But what steals the moment is her amazing wit, as we navigate the weeks of shooting on location with her, experiencing everything vicariously as she works her magic along with other fabulous British actors.
