I don’t normally read historical fiction. Actually, I hardly do, but when I saw this one on BookOutlet, the premise sounded intriguing so I chose to borrow from the library. I’m glad I did because it turned out to be a dud for me. Hardly any of the book follows what its description is about, the women are mostly unlikeable, and though things felt rushed, the book itself felt too long. Content includes sexual abuse (nothing explicit), animal brutality, violence, suicide, and some profanity.

3.5 stars!!

haven't been reading as much WWII historical fiction as I used to, but this had been on my list for a while now and it always sounded a little different take on the genre. It is almost more of a slice of life/character study of several women with not much action/events in the plot. It also mostly focuses on after the war, with some flashbacks. Overall pretty good, especially after not reading this subject matter for a while.

I really enjoyed this book about three German women living through, but mostly after, World War II. The plot moved swiftly and not predictably, the characters were three dimensional, and the descriptions of individuals reconciling themselves with the rapidly changing (deteriorating!) politics and morals of their country was resonant. I strongly recommend it.

Beautiful

Loved this book! Such a beautiful story of how different people navigated such a difficult time in history and how their choices shaped their paths. Highly recommend this book.

Really good until the end, in my opinion. I thought the part about the author writing a book was contrived, and a lot of the themes throughout weren't fully explored. Still a worthwhile read.

What an important book- it may be my ignorance but I never thought about life in Germany after WWII. How do people go from being a Nazi back to ‘regular ‘ life? This book is raw and honest- bringing me to tears at times.

This book is astounding!

A historical novel (mostly) set at the end of World War II, The Women in the Castle tells the story of three women in Germany whose husbands died trying to resist the Nazis. Although their husbands are united in this noble cause, these women- who they were before the war and how they learn to live after the war- couldn't be more different.

This is a fascinating perspective of WWII that, as an American, I have not seen before. I had not thought about the war from the perspective of the Germans- particularly Germans against Hitler who stayed in Germany. The author does a wonderful job creating well rounded, complex characters that continue to develop throughout the novel. I really enjoyed reading this book!
