A cute nerdy modern Romeo and Juliet-esque story, but knocked off half a star because of some underwhelming connections to and slight stiffness of characters. Still a pleasant read though :)

“Even if that thing is a comic book?”

“Comic books mean a lot to some people.”

You know what? This was cute book.

I’m giving it a bonus half star because Canadian bias and I loved all the mentions of places I’m familiar with and can make fun of from experience.

Miriam was immature about dealing with the family dispute. It felt wrong for her to give Weldon the cold shoulder when he didn’t directly have a part in the outcome. And she seemed like she blamed people for things not in their control. I understand immediately feeling anger but she was just resentful. (And all of her friends, minus Evan, kind of sucked).

The romance between Mir and Weldon was very lust-y/love at first sight, but they have a good premise given their opposing families and family drama. It felt very suddenly and didn’t really have much development, so the inevitable drama that came didn’t phase me since they didn’t have much (imo). I think it would’ve been better if they built a friendship instead.

Very well written. Very relevant to comics today.

Originally I requested this book from the publisher directly but I was accepted on Netgalley instead. I was drawn in to this book by the cover. I love this cover so much and I'm a sucker for anything comics. Thanks Marvel! Anyway this book was about to teens who come from families that hate each other. Romeo and Juliet anyone? The book its self disappointed me.

I didn't care for the main character, Miriam I thought she was kinda a flat character and found myself liking the boy she likes instead. But I did have some issues with his character as well. Weldon is a troubled rich kid. He's the typical one you see in all young adult books. He gets kicked out of school and steals cars only to try to get the attention from his parents who are never around and sent him to live with his aunt and uncle.

Overall the plot didn't really draw me in. It's a cute modern twist on Romeo and Juliet without the death. It has a bit of insta love almost. It seems like they barley know each other and they already are wanting to date each other. I did however get bored and almost didn't finish the book.

Read this on the plane today. Love the references to Comic-Con and how my time in San Diego has made that infinitely cooler.

I adored it, even when some of the logistics got a little clunky toward the end. (That fight? Weldon’s mom’s choice?) I loved how Hicks tackled the changes in comic culture. I grew up on the baseball card show circuit, and that shift was very much a part of my experience. I also liked how many adults there were present in both of the main characters lives. It held back the swoon but all the complexity they brought to the relationship felt very realistic. The overall premise is just delightful and shit-starting Weldon is my kind of romantic lead.

Finished this one tonight for my #owlsreadathon2019! Muggle Studies - ⚡

Enjoyable, but the character development and relationships seemed a bit rushed to me. The ending was also super rushed. I appreciated the Canadian references and could visualize the East Coast small town from many of the descriptions.

Oddest peeve of this book was, having gone to SDCC the last two years, you have to scan your badge to get it, not wave it. Minor things, but it totally threw off my visualization of walking up the con steps!

A cute and sweet coming of age contemporary.  A couple of teenagers growing up and seeing first hand the complications of family history and trying to get above it.

This was a wonderful read. If I had read this in middle or high school - this would have been my favorite book to re-read when I needed something light, loving and fun. The Evan-Mir best friends vibe was amazing, and the romance between Mir-Weldon was young and perfect.
