"Fable" follows the titular Fable, the daughter of the head of a trading empire and a gemsage, whose father has left her on an island after her mother's death. At 18, she is finally close to having made enough money to buy passage off the island to confront her father and reclaim what is her right: a place on one of his crews.
During the journey off the island to her father's, she learns more about the crew of the ship that is transporting her and about her father, gets embroiled in their conflicts, and falls in love.
I expected more Fantasy from this book, but Fable's abilities as a gemsage are only considered very little in this book, except as a secret she is meant to hide. This feels like a setup for it to become much more important in the sequel, which is what I hope for. Otherwise, this book sure plays in a world different from ours, but it's not so different that it feels like a Fantasy novel. It felt more like a seafaring adventure novel set in a nebulous past, with the intrigues amongst the traders even feeling a bit pirate-like.
I enjoyed this, but expected something slightly different.
In general an enjoyable read.

I feel I am getting too old to enjoy YA.
Cute book about a young girl trying to seek the approval of her father who abandoned her on an island. Along the way she finds friendship with a group of misfit characters and romance.
The romance was slowwwwww honestly it took the majority of the book for the two main characters to kiss. I need more romance in my books!
Honestly the only parts of the book that kept me going was the interactions with her father and her interactions with West.
This was my first pirate book and I don’t know if I’m pirate girly.

This is more like 3.8 stars than 4, I don't think I'm a sea adventure type of girl, but it was well-written and I liked it enough to start the next book. TBD.
Fave Line: “Down here, we were only two mortals in an upside-down world. The only world where I’d ever belonged.”
Genre: YA Fantasy
Synopsis:
Fable is abandoned as a child by her father to fend for herself on an island all alone. She dredges for treasures in the ocean and sells them to buy her passage to Cero where she hopes to reunite with her dad.
Along the way she meets people who try to take her and her new crew mates down, but they work together to push to get her back with her dad. Once seeing him things don’t go as planned and she must fight to get what is rightfully hers.
Rating:
4.5/5 ⭐️s
I love a book with a strong, independent female protagonist and that is everything Fable embodies. I also really enjoyed the relationship that the crew on the Marigold had and how well they worked together as a family. Now I MUST read the next book because of the cliffhanger at the end…
