fun read but i have mixed opinions. to begin with some positives, a lot of the characters have motives that entice you to read further in order to discover more about them or their relationship with others. the secrecy makes so much sense and i love how protective the crew are of one another despite not knowing entire truths for themselves. the main character has a personality that really surprised me from how passive she is but i guess that’s partially because of me thinking of ‘daughter of the pirate king’ where the fmc is very.. intense (you should also read that series if you like this book). fable really stands out when she’s talking to her father but aside from that i don’t think she’s the most interesting in the book. however, she would make good villain material as she has every reason to be one but i’m unsure if i’m going to continue the series.

the characterisation is great, especially with some of the side characters as for example i actually preferred willa as a character over fable, same with saint who had a lot of interesting moments. the conversations were great and the snippets of the past kept me engaged. i recently read ‘the unmaking of june farrow’ and i wouldn’t have ever guessed this book and that were by the same author which goes to show the amount of range and knowledge she has!

as an overall story though it’s not something that i haven’t seen before. i predicted everything and was shocked by nothing. it’s not exactly adventurous as a pirate story because most of the book is going around selling gems, drinking at an inn, conversations or found family stuff which is fine if it’s what you’re looking for as it’s well done in my opinion. i also felt that the plot isn’t strong enough to really justify it being more than a standalone, perhaps 100 extra pages could have sufficed. the romance was definitely something i had little care for as i saw far more chemistry between willa and fable. you can have a well written confession but it matters so little when the 2 characters have zero chemistry and surface level attraction with no opportunity to dive any deeper (like my pun? ;D). it grinds my gears when characters have no chemistry and we are expected to swoon at a heartfelt confession but luckily the romance is such a small part that it doesn’t really matter.

my favourite moment in the entire book was when fable was looking at her reflection in a window, realising just how much she looks like her mother and past the reflection her father is looking at her, thinking the exact same thing. i would totally be interested in a book set in their past but from my knowledge fables story is a duology with an added spin-off in the same world but following new characters which i probably won’t meet as i’m unsure about picking up the sequel. often when i’m really enjoying a series i’d buy the next book halfway in but for this one it’s a bad sign when even the cliffhanger hasn’t interested me on reading further.

This was a series that stuck with me a bit longer than most, although I do feel like there were some holes. overall, it was very entertaining!

I don't know what to say, this book is amazing! I don't even know why! The atmosphere of being out on the sea, sailing with a family-like crew, strong people and strong characters! I even love how gems get their own powers! It's really sweet of the author to acknowledge and dedicate to her late father. I just really loved the adventure and pacing of this book.

Although this book lacks a little in the romance department, there’s just something about it that demands respect for the main character.

Her mother dies in a sinking ship, her father abandons her immediately after (not before carving up her arm) and she’s left as a young teen to fend for herself amongst thieves and killers. Her father promised her that if she got off the island he’d give her what she wanted. They had different versions of what she wanted. He intended to give her an inheritance (a sunkin ship) but all she really wanted was a place by his side to call home. She didn’t get what she really needed out of the deal. Yet she is resilient through it all. One of the strongest female characters I’ve read this year.

I think the sadness of what she must have felt has lingered with me. She has family but isn’t recognized as such. Therefore, she has a “found” family to cling to. It’s endearing and heartbreaking thinking about it.

FABLEWEST AND SAINTISOLDE AND THE MARIGOLD CREW ARE EVERYTHING TO ME.

I binged this and book two on audio while I was sick at the beginning of the year and they made for a great escape/adventure while I was lying miserable in bed.

I really enjoyed the atmospheric descriptions of Fable’s dives and life at sea; I think they were some of the best-written parts of the book. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book with a nautical setting and it was a really fun change of pace.

My favorite part of the book was Fable’s gradual acceptance into a new found family. She went from a cutthroat existence of survival on Jeval to a, well, still-cutthroat existence with people who have her back — so pretty much all I can ask for, lol.

I enjoyed the various small heists and escapades the characters undertook throughout the book, I thought the budding romance was cute, and even though Fable wasn’t the most relatable character for me, I still cheered for her as she sought to be seen and valued by her father and make a life for herself.

I had a hard time rating this one because I definitely enjoyed it, but overall it wasn’t super memorable for me. Though, to be fair, I don’t retain as much from audiobooks as ebooks or physical books. Maybe I should try a reread in the future.

Overall, Fable was an entertaining and well-written adventure perfect for fans of YA fantasy with strong FMCs and found family; and fans of Pirates of the Caribbean and Daughter of the Pirate King.
