This book had me smiling through most of it! And that’s strange to say considering this is a WW2 novel and the topics that were weaved in were heavy to say the least.
Our main character Sarah dealt with her struggles of being a Jewess during a time of extreme prejudice. She didn’t let her situation make her feel like all was at a lost and when she came across Captain Floyd, she seemed to fit right into the aspects of going undercover and playing the part of a “little Aryan girl”. She kept her mother close to her heart at all times and found herself always talking to her spiritually and mentally to help guide her in the right direction.
I love the wit that was thrown into this between the relationship of Captain Floyd and Sarah. It was never too serious and always had some sort of light heartedness in their conversations.
Sarah’s acting in front of her enemy felt so real and at the same time, we as the readers could feel the pressure that was on her at all times.
Overall, great read that has lots of emotions coursing through it! Hope to see a second book!

Really really lovely, though a bit slow at times. I think the overall story was worth the effort it took to get through this book, but I couldn't help dreading to finish it and I'm not entirely sure why. Every time I read it, I enjoyed it, but I never felt like reading this book. Regardless it was still a very good YA historical fiction and I would still recommend it.
***Goodreads Winner***
It’s mean girls meets inglorious basterds. Does Sarah complete her mission? You have to read it to find out!

I don’t read much YA fiction brings a grown women but the interesting premise, shiny Art Deco type cover and Costa book award sticker on it reeled me in!
As others have said the plot line of a teen Jewish spy infiltrating a Nazi girl school for the elite was interesting, but the story lacked heart and the character lacked a personality and I just never felt invested in the story.
I’m sure many teenagers will love it though and for a first novel it’s pretty good teen read.

This book was incredible! Wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, but it offered a different portrait of the experience of the pre- and early-war Germans that I found really interesting. The historical note at the back really enhanced the reading experience, especially learning about Lise Meitner's real life impact on the development of the atomic bomb. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys reading WWII historical fiction.
I don’t really know what to say to that book. I picked it up with incredibly high expectations, given that it features the topics I am most interested in, namely World War 2 and the Nazi regime, especially the way young people such as me experienced this time. Maybe the problem is that I have read to many books on these topics and know to much about it to forgive some mistakes authors make. A novel about these things needs to be really good to capture my attention and make me feel the shock and deep sadness I am used to feel while reading books like this.
First of all, I was somewhat annoyed by the strange German things Sarah thinks to herself. Being German myself, I am very well able to understand the strange slurs she uses, and- just as an example- I can’t really believe that a teacher (no matter which horrible political opinions she wants the students to believe) would ever call a student „stupid bitch“ or something like that. But that’s just a little part of why I didn’t like the book. I guess it’s just that I found it boring at times, especially when I finished it and realised that it didn’t give me anything.

(Incomplete) content notes for the book: sexual abuse and rape of teenagers by adults, alcoholism, child neglect and abuse, anti-Semitism, ableism
This book is brilliant, engaging, twisty, violent, immersive. Hard to read at points, but it didn't feel to me like the traumas were sensationalised, or simply plot devices. I connected a lot with Sarah, I think Matt Killeen did a good job of depicting the way a traumatised child's mind works. I'm looking forward to reading more about her in the next book.
