OKAY. This book was FULL of surprises, one of them being just how much i enjoyed it!
This is an honest to god Hades & Persephone + Beauty & the Beast retelling. No. Literally. There’s a scene were he shows her the library and she, word for word, says that it’s basically the same library from the animated film of Beauty & the Beast. I mean, hello?! WHAT?! This book breaks the fourth wall that even Deadpool would be proud of it!
I loved that we started right off the bat. A strong opening and an amazing plot. It was dark. Sexy. I’ve never read Finish mythology and i gotta say, i need more of it. It gave me kinda Frozen vibes too which, i loved. Honestly i was not expecting to love this but i did, and now i’m mad that i have to wait a few weeks for book two!

Interesting take on hades/Persephone. I don’t know much about Finnish mythology.

When Hanna Heikkinen travels to Finland to attend her father's funeral, something seems off. It starts when she's met unexpectedly at the airport by her father's strange friend. She then finds out her father's body is missing and knows something is going on. When her father's apprentice, Rasmus, informs her that her father isn't really dead and she can save him by going to the Realm of the Dead, she must decide if he can be trusted. Determined to do whatever to save him, she heads to the Realm of the Dead with Rasmus.
I really enjoyed this book (but I love just about everything Karina Halle writes lol). River of Shadows is based on Finnish mythology which I thought was unique! The world building was well done and I liked learning about Tuonela. This book was fast paced and I devoured it. I loved Tuoni. He may be the God of Death but I think Karina did an amazing job humanizing him. Hanna's friendship with Lovia and Bell was great! That cliffhanger was killer though.
Even though I'm just now writing this review, I read River of Shadows and Crown of Crimson last year and this series is one of my favorites!
