Obviously difficult to judge this having seen the Arnie film... The idea of contestants in a game remains, but very little else is the same.
The idea of Richards being on the run throughout the public places of America doesn't really make sense - how could someone survive without being spotted by a reward claiming public, especially when, as the blurb says, the game is rigged?
Reading the book in the year in which it's set was interesting (the broadcast media exploiting ordinary people for ratings?) but the idea of a 'resistance' to the media control wasn't really explored, so you just end up with a kinda boring run of a character heading for an (after a certain point) obvious conclusion.

Joder.

I really loved this book. I think reading it in 2025 added some extra value to it. I mean, the story takes place in 2025. It is a very different world than ours, but one that I could totally imagine happening. Actually, if we continue with the air pollution, some aspects of the book might happen.
I loved how easily it read. It had a good flow and small bits to read. The countdown is a great idea. I also liked the concept of the Quiz shows, although the selection process was a bit weird.
The main character started up like someone you could simpatize with but for some reason as the story continued I had less and less sympathie for him.
I also find it wierd how long he was going on with all his injuries and having his wound open up multiple times. However, I understand that he needed to go on, in order to finish his "mission". I liked the ending, how he accepts the job and then kills everyone who is part of the game. Saving the life of the innocent woman was a nice gesture. I'm a bit sad that we don't get to know how his wife and child really died. Also, the timing seemed a bit strange. If I understand correctly they were already dead when the money for the game was delivered. This was for me not logical.
Overall I kept reading and found myself thinking about the book when I was not reading it. There were some interesting topics regarding politics, economics and sociology which could be a great discussion starter.

I just can’t with King’s slightly misogynistic style, it comes through in little points through the story.
I still need to try something newer from him though…
