emotional informative fast-paced

An engaging story about the haenyeo, all-female diving collective. I enjoyed the historical fiction and writing and learned about Korean history. At it’s core, this is a story about friendship, misunderstanding and forgiveness. I thoroughly enjoyed the strength and vulnerability of this book.
informative medium-paced

Actually more like a 3.5 for me. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a wonderful job.

Recomendado! Muy interesante manera de contar la historia turbia de la isla de Jeju y de las mujeres “haenyeo” de Corea.

I knew so little about what occurred in Korea on Jeju Island after WW2. At its core a story of friendship and redemption told through women divers who sustained their families by what they caught at sea. Focused on the lives of 2 women, it covers the tragedy and trauma of their livelihood, the massacres that took place, and how perceived loyalties impacted Koreans for generations. Found it very emotional.

This is a well-written story with strong feminine themes, exploring various relationships and how they grow and change over time. I found the end a little lack-luster but it was also a satisfying way to end the book.
