Ugh. I was hopeful about this book, but it turned into a paranoia train that wouldn't stop. It felt repetitive at times, and the main character was extremely anxiety induced that it made me feel extremely uneasy about normal things that happened in the book. The last 25% was actually thrilling but the very end was a dud.

No such thing as a secret

Perfect thriller, always kept me guessing. What appears to be a happy family from the outside is completely wrong. The weight of a secret can ruin things.

Veronica's life hasn't turned out the way she planned. A surprise pregnancy resulted in a quick marriage and now, a dozen years later, she's tired of her marriage but can't leave because of her daughter. When her husband becomes a hero after he finds a kidnapped child, a harsh spotlight shines on them all, and Veronica wonders if they can survive. A page-turner, some moments of "what are you thinking?!" and "saw that one coming," but all in all, a fast, satisfying read.

More like a 3.5

A well paced satisfying read. While I guessed what happened relatively early on, I found the development interesting and the ending satisfying.

Gracious.

Unlikeable characters does not cause me to dislike a book. Unlikeable characters in a boring book that should have been a novella, does.

Illogical, needy, immature, whinney wife, a big stupid for a husband, and his corny, manipulative best friend, surrounding a crime best committed by unlikeable characters in a fast-paced, riveting book, would have been more to my liking. This was definitely a snooze fest.

I picked this up after the amazing Jane, Doe as the blurb sounded interesting. I liked that this thriller tells the story was a different point of view. What is it like to go virile on social media?

To an outsider, it looks great, you become famous and suddenly all attention is on you. but for Veronica, she wants to keep her secrets. I found it suspicious that her husband was doing badly as a personal trainer and then he finds a missing child and whoosh he becomes the media darling, his sales increases. I suspected he had something to do with the kidnapping. The rest of the family is thrust into the spot light and it gets overwhelming.

Veronica is not a likeable character. She complains that she is in an unhappy marriage and she is only staying for her child, Sydney. She needs something to pull her through and so she embarks on an affair with Johnny's best friend, Micah. Then she becomes this needy mess and keeps needing Micah to reply and respond to her. Argh. I could sympathise with her as she has had to deal with Johnny, his cheating, steroid use and selling and bad friends. But I could also feel the irony that she is repeating what her father did to her mother.

The plot was surprisingly predictable though the writing kept this from becoming a 2.5 stars book. The villain did not make sense and the little explanation at the end felt rushed.

Okay thriller.  I was annoyed for much of the novel by the heroine and her poor choices and even poorer rationale for making her choices.  I also predicted the identity of the villain very early on.  But the author turned things around in the last few chapters, and the ending was satisfying.
