This book was difficult for me mostly just for the secret children thing, which if I had read the blurb I would have known and then probably not read.

'Shutout' by Jami Davenport is the first book in a new hockey series of hers. This series is going to follow a number of up and coming hockey players trying to get on the Seattle Sockeyes team who have agreed to be single and enjoy it. 'Shutout' is the first book and is dedicated to Easton, or Big E is as he's called. Easton has one regret, Carolyn a summer fling that he's beginning to wish he hadn't let go and wondering why finally making it to the NHL isn't fulfilling him the way he hoped. Everything changes when he discovers that Carolyn's twins are his.

I can't deal with women keeping their kids from their fathers. I felt zero chemistry and much liking for the main couple but I think its cause I just couldn't wash off the icky feeling of how she's treating him despite him not doing a single thing for why he's not in those kids lives. Sure they are grieving and sure it's a horrible jump from dad to dad but why else contact him, why tell him hey you have kids but we can't chat. It made it seem like he was being used as a cash cow, here take care of all our needs cause our previous provider has expired but you don't get any of the benefits like the kids that are yours that you've been denied forever. Yes I can see how the mistake was made, and yes I can see needing that time to grieve, but why couldn't see get her life together, settle her kids then reach out. Why does she have to jump right into everything with him and then kinda act like a controlling bitch. It was unsettling and just all around horrible.

The storyline had great potential, but was executed poorly.
Felt like I was reading a Wattpad story with lots of grammatical errors. Also, the characters didn’t really develop through the story and the ending felt rushed.
Also the conversation they had with the children when telling them Easton was their father was not a realistic scenario for 6-year olds.

Too much hype for this.

200 and some odd pages. Not enough to capture me. However, I'm stubborn. And if I start a book, no matter how much I don't like it - I'll read it until the end. Which is unfortunate because now I will have to finish the series out since I started it.

I really hate to sound like I'm ragging on this author. I'm sure this author is a splendid writer. However, this book is giving me a high school student writing their very own first short story.

The plot idea was a good one. Just executed very poorly. The back and forth between the two main characters gave me a migraine. They both are very possessive and controlling. She wants him to be in her kids' life. But she wants to control every single aspect. He wants to be in the kids' life. But he wants it to be on his terms.

Very icky to me. From a person who witnessed her own parents horrible custody battle - this book reminded me of it.

From the hype of this book, I had hoped for a deeper connection. It was more of a "hey, big daddy movie connection but let's make it ✨️hockey. Death. Enemies to lovers✨️

Meh. I give it a 2/10. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a fan of those super cheesy books that feel like you're reading a fanfic on wattpad or even YouTube story episodes (hey. No judgement. I was a middle schooler who posted these once. Lol!)

Hmmm... sometimes I think my reviews might be a little spoiler-y, but then I realize that most of what I write sounds a lot like the blurbs for the books on Amazon ;)

Caroline and Easton spent a summer together when they were in high school. He broke up with her because he knew they both had things they wanted to do - his being playing professional hockey, and Caro wanted to go to school and become a nurse. They were in love, but they both thought it was "young love", although the breakup left them both heartbroken.

5 years later, Easton is thinking about Caro, missing her and thinking that he maybe should have never let her go. He finds out where she's living and when he parks on the street outside her house, he sees her with her husband and young children.

2 years after that (7 yrs after they'd broken up), Caro is a young widow with 6 year old twins. When she does a DNA test on her kids - on the advice of her mother-in-law, she is stunned at the results. She finds herself in the position of getting hold of Easton to tell him that he's a father. He's stunned and angry that he missed out on the last 6 years of their lives. He eventually lets go of the anger, and also realizes that his feelings for and his attraction to Caro hasn't changed - he might have put them in the back of his mind for a while, but now, he just wants to find a way to make them all his family.

I would have liked to see a little more inclusion of the grandparents who had been in the lives of Heath and Hailey toward the end of the book.

Enjoyable overall.
