I had to keep reminding myself this was a YA novel- why aren't they having sex yet?? :D It was a cool re-imagining of American history, but it felt a little like it was a British story set in America- the whole "trapped royalty" thing felt a little "The Crown" to me? Esp with the dynamic between her and her sister.

Enjoyed it, but it didn't bowl me over.

This book was disappointing. But, it’s probably my fault it was disappointing because I had heard about it from a friend and only remembered that she said it was about what would have happened if George Washington became a king and his heirs ruled the country. I thought that was a really interesting premise, but it’s only tangentially about that. It’s mostly about the love lives of the three royal children. If I wanted to read a YA romance novel about a princess, I would have sought one out. However, I didn’t go looking for that type of book and was disappointed to find it here. I also found one of the main characters EXTREMELY irritating. In the end, I’m slightly curious about what happens next—but probably not enough to read the next book in the series unless I have nothing else in my “available now” queue at the library.

Devoured this novel. Absolutely loved it. What would the world look like if America were a monarchy? Ask no more. I loved the characters, relationships, plots. I think it would make a great movie. If you're into grandeaur and monarchy, with a little high school drama sprinkled in, you'll love this.

Read if you love: royals, college drama

Idc what anyone says, I love this book. It’s so messy (drama wise) and SO good and the end gave me chills

4.5

Excellent Book! Loved it, wanted more!! Terrific characters, a fun twist on history if Washington had been named a King instead of voted in as a President.

Frothy, fun read. Looking forward to finding out what happens next with these characters

This book was enjoyable, but not all of the storylines worked for me. I enjoyed the Beatrice and Samantha arcs, but I think that Nina and especially Daphne didn't add enough to the story to warrant their own POV chapters. I would have preferred the book to focus on the princesses and their motivations, which at times felt shaky. If anything, the Daphne and Nina plots could have been explained through Jefferson POV chapters, as his character felt underdeveloped. More time could have been spent on the world-building and the intricacies of monarchical USA.

That said, I will still read all the books that follow because I am hooked! I would also definitely watch a TV show - it would be like a The Man in the High Castle and The Royals mash-up!!!

George Washington never became President, instead he became King. In current day we now follow the royal family of the United States and their friends as they navigate becoming adults in court.

This was incredible. I loved that we didn't just follow the heir, Beatrice, but we also follow her twin siblings, their best friends, and girlfriend. This added a lot of different perspectives which made the whole story like a soap opera. The are also hints throughout the story at something that has happened in the past but we don't know about it until the every end. Topics of the pressure to be the next ruler of the United States, what it's like to live in that shadow, differences of status and how they interact, how goals of status can take over, how the press presents different stories etc. are all things covered. If you like drama, new romance, royalty, dances, betrayal, or secrets you will love this. I cannot wait for the second book.

Ok hear me out. It's a 5 star because it's exactly what I need right now. Is the writing outstanding? Probably not. Are the characters deep? Not really.

The concept of what it mightve been like if the US had a monarchy is interesting, and honestly not something I've seen as a plot before.

It's a fine balance of cheese and drama, and I'm looking forward to the next books in the series.
