I read the first book when it came out (at least 6 years ago) so I remembered very little about what had happened in the first book. I understood the events of this book but forgot a lot about the relationships between characters, who was who, etc. Jace had so many damn siblings. There's got to be like 11 at this point because every chapter they discussed a new person and it's like who are these people???? That's my fault for not reading the first and second books closer together.

The romance is just as rushed as I remembered it to be and a lot of the love declarations felt a little cringey and insta-lovey but it's fine. I think the plot was pretty entertaining but some of the romance stuff felt repetitive. However, I must give Mary E Pearson credit for doing that marriage reveal. I have an extreme weakness for any kind of dramatic reveal, especially a secret marriage reveal because the tea is always SCALDING. So, although I didn't really care much about the romance, I ate that up because I just love that kind of drama.

“I love you, Jase Ballenger, and I will for all of my days.”
Kazi is by far one of the STRONGEST female leads I’ve seen in a fantasy setting. Not only does this girl go through so damn much, but she is much better than me. I can say for sure that I wouldn’t have taken my in-laws throwing me out to get tortured well at all. At that point I doubt I would have even tried saving the kids. Not to mention, what was up with the King’s obsession with her? He was such a douche to her, and the shit she did to manipulate him was SO badass. Overall, Kazi belongs on a throne (literally and figuratively). MAY I ALSO MENTION THAT HER TORTURE SCENES WERE SO SAD? TT I BAWLED.

“A thousand times over, Kazi,” I whispered. “I would marry you more than a thousand times.”
Jase Ballenger is such a well-written character in my opinion. Though I still wouldn’t say he belongs up with the best book men, he is probably one of my favourites in the sense of realism. Managing so much at once as well as Kazi is wild, though I do kind of wish he would have paid more attention to her. I know for a fact someone like Aaron or Cardan would have spent their sweet time gutting their wife’s captor. BUT THAT SCENE WHEN HE SAID ‘WHERE IS MY WIFE’ WAS SO AHHHHH.

“Goodbye, Mama. Goodbye.”
Dance of thieves was by far one of my favourite fantasy books ever read. The duology was so well written to the point of Six Of Crows and The Cruel Prince (my favourite fantasies) and so many scenes gave me a reminder of the two books. I ate the second book up especially, and pulling an all-nighter for a book is something I have never done before, but I believe it was so worth it. I loved the nostalgia trip this series gave me, I loved the characters, Jase and Kazi, Paxton, and the AMAZING PLOT. I would probably reread this again too, as I feel the second time around would be even more fun to read through. Thank you, Mary E. Pearson, for this absolute masterpiece of a story. Kazimyrah is great.

The first half of the book was a bit too long-winded for me, and I was rather bored. Things picked up in the second half and more plots and actions started pouring in. The characters were steady, their personalities solid and evolving. Kazi was still as strong and respectable as ever. Overall, I believe the book can cut off a lot of pages to improve the pacing, so I’d rate it lower than the first book.
