This book was amazing. I know the story topic seems a bit depressing, but it's such weird, captivating story!

I didn’t know exactly what I was expecting, but this wasn’t it.

Stolen: A letter to my Captor is more beautifully written than I expected. It made me re-think many things- my views, an author’s influence, etc.

For starters, the description was compelling. I mean, the “you saw me before I saw you” sentiment was too intriguing to pass on.

Then, I found myself confused.

Confused with myself.

Around the time when Ty describes why he abducts her, I begin to have sympathy for him. SYMPATHY! Sympathy for someone who has stalked a minor for years and then kidnaps her.
(/spoiler)

Why? Why did I want them to end up together? It seems stupid- morally wrong, at least- but I can’t help it. Something about the way Gemma narrates her story, perhaps, since she has a weird affection for him.

I don’t know. I don’t know why I sympathized with Ty or found myself wanting them together.

Either way, I’d recommend that you read it.
challenging dark emotional tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Raises some interesting issues on morality but it fails to really delve into the lasting impact of psychological abuse inherent to kidnap.

I don't know how to feel about this book other than I have known for years that I was going to love it. And I did. Ty is the most misunderstood characters and my heart literally bled for him. I'm happy that I waited this long to read Stolen as the second book comes out in June. Even though I know his actions were wrong, I really want Gemma and Ty to end up together. He just needed someone to love him as fiercely as he loved. And he really does deserve it.

I wasn't a fan of the book. I thought it went from her having normal reactions to Ty (scared, angry etc) to curious/love very quickly and only at the very end. There was not enough development, in my opinion, to warrant her starting to have feelings for him. So I never got invested in him- I always saw his as a psychopath that she needed to escape from.

I read this in 2016 by randomly picking it off the shelf in Barnes and Noble. The cover attracted me, I read this during a very hot, unforgettable and sad summer (well for me) and I finished it in on my break while I worked at IN-N-OUT and anyone who passed me by was like “u good?” I’m like yeah I just read a beautiful, dark story with a setting that I dream about and it’s just one of those stories that stays in your engraved in your brain depending on where you’re at or what’s going on in your life.

Actual rating : 3.7

Like Gemma, I would say that "I felt so mixed up" about this book. Illustrating the psychological state of a teenage girl, while being kidnapped by a person who had already made a little place in her heart, I think that the writing could be more vivid and influential. I also get that the whole book was a letter written by a sixteen year old girl, and we cannot expect a super comprehensive statement from her of her own feelings. Although, it was lively enough to create an atmosphere that, at times, you start thinking like her, and feeling the uncertainty that she had until the end of the letter. However, the book is not just about the narration of an ordeal from the perspective of a teenage girl, it includes a lot more than that. Overall, this book was good and an easy read.
