 Ten strijden tegen mijn Chimp

Bring it on chimp!

"Do I have a mind of a chimp or a human?" is the main scientific theory expressed in this book. It uses simple explanations, examples, diagrams and anecdotes.

From the reviews, I can see this is a very marmitey book. Some love it, some hate it. My own opinion is that, for a self help book, it isn't that bad.

It does, of course, suffer from being a self help book. I don't know why I keep reading them! My advice to anyone going into (any) self help book is not to expect it to drastically change your life. Take the bits you like, learn from them and skim over the rest.

I'll bullet what I liked and didn't like about The Chimp Paradox:

Liked:

- The core concept makes intuitive sense and is a good visualisation of the conflict within our brains

- Things are kept simple and snappy

- There were many useful nuggets of advice within these pages

- For those who struggle to manage their emotions, it's an excellent starting point, especially for men (who I feel the book is mostly aimed at)

- Lots of varied advice, along with some excellent thought experiments

Disliked:

- Dr Peters is very insistent that happiness is a choice. This, along with several other ideas, makes the book inappropriate for people with serious mental illness (it may still be of use to those who have been adequately treated or whose illness is milder)

- It's a long book that tries to cover everything! Every aspect of wellbeing - success, happiness, CBT, stoicism etc. etc. This could either be seen as value for money or as biting off more than can be chewed in one book

- Presentation - sometimes a bit dense and colourless

- Although the approach to not being a victim will be seen by some as empowering or refreshing, it does sometimes nudge the line between promoting personal responsibility and victim blame at times (taken in the context of current popular ideas and zeitgeist)

- Only lip service given to actual pathology leading to psychological malfunctioning - I.e. mental illness

I recommend this book to people struggling to manage their emotions or get the results they want from their efforts, especially those with little understanding of CBT etc. I will be taking pinches of advice from the book and think most people will find something here that helps.

There are some good ideas in the book but it's overly wordy, the terms (Suns, moons, planets etc) made it a bit distracting & frustrating. The first half of the book felt like wading through treacle & I nearly gave up, the second half felt more practical & satisfying.
hopeful informative

I originally attempted to read this book back when I was an 18 year old - and failed miserably. I picked it up to try again 5 years later and was surprised by how easy it was to read and understand - clearly, I was not as mature as I thought.
As someone now practicing in psychology, this book is very factually accurate and covers much of what you would learn about on CBT courses and during work with an IAPT service. Highly recommend for any aspiring psychology practitioners and for anyone looking to gain some understanding of their emotion and thought difficulties. The book is filled with helpful activities to put what he talks about into practice, these are written with clear instructions and you can see how helpful they will be to practice. Even as someone for who a lot of the content was not new knowledge, it offered it in an alternative way that it stayed engaging and informative, acting to build my understanding further than I thought possible.

read this book, just read it. my mom actually read it before me and then gave it to me, knowing how influential it would be for me and my struggles.
so many self help books out there identify how you can do physical things to improve yourself and well being. this book however really gives you tasks and knowledge on how to mange your mind. even if you dont struggle with mental illness, this book is written in such a way that it can be applied to every corner of life and daily tasks.
the writing was so easy to understand, i read some in tears and manic mind chaos and it genuinely felt like therapy, at the end of each chapter, it provides you with simple tasks to aid your mind management and they all are so simple i was reading it thinking 'why haven't i thought about that like this before'

love love love it, will always keep it handy, and ive annotated it so i can flick through and find specific bits whenever i need them
