The Husbands

How much easier would it be for women to succeed if they had a partner who took on a fair share of domestic duties? If they didn’t have to be the only one organizing child care and meals and all of life’s daily admins that bog us all down. In short, what if women had a wife?

Such is the premise of The Husbands // Chandler Baker, an upside down Stepford Wives that introduces the exclusive suburb of Dynasty Ranch where the uber successful women have seemingly figured out how to make their husbands step up at home so they can step up in their careers. Add in a mysterious death, some sinister encounters and one seriously overwhelmed woman and you have a soapy, fun summer read.

As an unmarried, childless woman I probably didn’t relate to this story as much as some women will. Although, my partner and I have been together for ten years, so I definitely did relate to some of it. This book falls into the popular genre of “women’s” stories littered with really frustrating men. The main character’s husband was the weakest part of the story for me. For as much as she claimed to love him despite his many, many flaws, it was never satisfyingly explained what was keeping her with this man and the whole plot hinges on her staying with him.

Nitpick aside, this is a fun, easy read and I think a lot of people will enjoy it.

This was a gender-flipped Stepford Wives with definite Get Out vibes and some domestic thriller tropes thrown in. Descriptions of the MC feeling overworked and underappreciated were spot on, especially the focus on the mental load of invisible work of parenting. The middle to end of the book was a bit far-fetched (
getting away with murder through networking and hypnotism, apparently
) but the very ending, like the last sentence of the book, was amazingly clever.

Decided to read because:
I really enjoyed The Whisper Network

Reminded me of:
  • The Stepford Wives
  • Get Out
  • Nine Perfect Strangers

Chandler Baker = The queen of Feminist Thrillers.

Nora has it all, the husband, the child + one baking, the job she’s in the running to become partner and a soon to be new house in a supportive community when women empower other women. The only thing that’s missing is some help from her husband.

Why is it that men work their asses off but when women do it they also have to do the ten other jobs no one else sees? The women in Dynasty Ranch have it all sorted. Nora’s eyes are opened to a world where women are the bread winners and their husbands pull their weight.

Perfect timing the women in the community need a lawyer too look into a wrongful death case. Nora digs and digs until she begins to see having it all isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Welcome to Dynasty Ranch, we do things a little different around here, Click!

This has you second guessing everyone and everything and before you know it you were in the middle of it and there’s no going back. The Stepford Wives x Safe. Starts slow but once it picks up it will have you turning pages! What an incredible follow up to The Whisper Network, I cannot wait for this to be a movie.
