I think Genya's character and story are both quite interesting, yet this novella is too short and too simple to truly make use of that.
Although this story did give some well-needed insights, it definitely had the potential to be better. Unfortunately, it just ended up being slightly disappointing and perhaps even a bit boring.

It hurts, but I can bear it. Because I am a doll and a servant. Because I am a pretty thing and a soldier all the same.

Totally amazing novella telling us about Genya. Showing us parts of stuff that we have seen, but this time through Genya's eyes, but we also learn more of her past. :D

I loved this little insight into Genya. Spending so much time in Alina's head where she's pretty isolated and no one talks honestly and openly, it was nice to get a deeper feel of one of my favorite side characters.

I read this after the ending of the second book and even knowing the fate that awaits her, I still can’t find it in my heart to like her. Still, what the Darkling did to her was horrific and truly makes you believe that there are worse things than death, and yes I get that humans can be very selfish at times and she only wanted someplace to belong. The queen is a bitch too but Genya was suffering, she shouldn’t have let Alina suffer along with her. They both needed a friend, and Genya could’ve given herself that. Even the Darkling gave her the freedom to do what she pleases with the letters and she still choose herself ..... so? Her fate was too too too harsh and my heart constricted reading that scene, but actions and selfishness do have their consequences. She had so many opportunities to go with Alina but she always chose not to.

I love how we get to know so much about Genya in these 18 pages. I mean, at first I didn't fully understand why she sided with the Darkling in the first book, but it totally makes sense now. She had been ostracized. They didn't treat her as a Grisha even though she was one and that's the only thing she wanted. "I’d wish to be a true Grisha again." She just wanted to belong.

It’s only 18 pages so I can’t really rate this good or bad or anything really. It gives you a glimpse into Genya’s thoughts which was fun to read but not anything special.
