When I can enjoy a children's book as much as a child, I know I've found a winner. A group of friends (including a mushroom and a unicorn) go on a quest to recover their homeland's mystical crystals of life. There's danger, though most of the time our heroes seem oblivious to it. The end of their journey evokes a plot twist that continues their quest, but ends in a wonderful party.
Lots of humorous asides and comments are found in the many chat bubbles. Cutesy, appropriately colored characters and scenery add to the fun. My favorite part is when Trevor the Mushroom is asked if he's doing okay, since he's dangling over a cliff and Blossom the Unicorn is holding onto his lower half, and he replies: "I can't feel my legs!" Hehehe.
There's a ton to see here and point out, akin to the old "I Spy" titles. Younger kids might experience difficulty with the darker parts, but mostly it's all in good fun. Highly recommended!

This was awesome. I loved the illustrations and all the fantasy references. What a fun story.

A unicorn, a gnome, a faun, a fairy, and a toadstool named Trevor go on a quest. Scariness, silliness, and cuteness ensues. Probably best for slightly older kids, or adults who will get a kick out of the Tolkien references.

I think this book is meant for fully grown Adventure Time fans, and yet...it is a picture book. And even as a fully grown Adventure Time fan, I felt my eyes crossing at the potluck of tiny text and jumbled illustrations on each page. Allusions to various fantasy series and tropes felt more like, "Okay, was wondering when that would be wedged in," instead of fresh witticisms.

Playing with traditional fantasy elements, this book is a fun, wacky, adventure with a sense of humor I can appreciate.
The plotting could have been smoother, but I got a kick out of this, so it was definitely worth picking up.

The kind of book I wish I had written. Well, at least, the geeky me. It's silly. Fun. At no point does it take itself seriously and I would have thought that it would guarantee even the most reluctant reader to read.

Quirky and vivid and full of energy. The illustrations are fun, and there are some references in it for adult readers. Overall, it's more about all the delightful details of the art than it is about the story. It would make a terrible bedtime story but a great book to keep a child occupied or engaged in conversation.
