DID NOT FINISH

Kind of excruciatingly repetitive

Jokingly, I would like to think that I do not know who suffered more during this book, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, or myself. I realistically know it's myself, because the two others don't exist... Yeah, yeah, it's obviously the two others, because after just a few days of trying to be a knight errant, Don Quixote had already lost half his teeth on one side, and he still chose to go on. So did I.

Don Quixote, for those who do not know yet, is written in two bigger volumes, one published in 1605, and the other came out 10 years later. I think the first part is the strongest, as those little adventures are all their own thing, with a bit of it coming together at the end, but volume 2 got pretty dull after a while. It is more entwined, and a bit more difficult to follow if you're trying to get through the book quickly. I realise Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are pretty ridiculous characters and they chose to be so, but the content of volume 2, the ridicule, is something that I wasn't a fan of. I would not feel as if I had missed something had volume 2 not existed and it would have ended with just the one.

If you want to brag about having read this then I would recommend that you pick it up, but if bragging rights do not matter to you, then maybe don't pick it up, or try to only read the first part and if you had enough, stop there?

Happy Reading!

George Guidall reads the audiobook version of this. He also reads Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire books, which are written in the first person. Therefore, it's very easy to imagine that Walt himself is reading Don Quixote to you. Given how meta this book is the first place, I'd bet Cervantes would appreciate the idea of a fictional character reading his book to you.

  • The original Dumb and Dumber. If you like the office, you will like this book. The main characters just continuously, befall hardships due to their own ignorance/naivety Don Quixote definitely reminds me of Michael Scott in that way
  • From the beginning, you see how delusional Don Quixote is.
  • How is Sancho so gullible! Don Quixote’s promises may not be malicious, but that makes them no less empty. And Sancho just believes every one!
  • This book reads like a modern TV show is written. There are consistent characters who go on miscellaneous adventures, but there’s no obvious storyline or action tying the entire book together. Instead, it is just a collection of adventures.

It was really long, but the plot was good.

Grossman's translation is a great achievement, and Cervantes was a visionary. With that said, DQ is a challenging book because of its length and repetition. Jokes have to be explained if you don't understand Spanish because a lot of it involves clever word play. Its all worth the work for any serious reader.

I've finally made my way through this behemoth. I wish I could say it was well worth the effort, but mostly I find myself confused. I do not understand why this book is a classic. More importantly, I'm not sure what the author was trying to do. Of course, it is a parody/satire written 400 years ago, so I don't expect to understand everything. But the parts of the story I found most interesting were the stories within the story, which had nothing to do with DQ or Sancho Panza. I guess I better go back and read the introduction...
