Admittedly this trilogy is not breaking news—the final volume has been out since 2016. However, if you, like me, suffer from Swiss cheese memory and thus prefer to wait until an entire series is published and read it all in one go, now is the perfect time to get into the Tearling. I started the first book over Thanksgiving weekend wanting to be completely swept up in a story, and it did just that. I did not want to put it down—and I couldn’t order the second and third books fast enough. Kelsea was raised in a secluded forest by foster parents, but now that she’s in her late teens, a group of men shows up and she’s forced to go with them to take on her role as queen of the realm. Her foster parents told her maddeningly little about why she was hidden and what awaits her as queen, and her escorts are hardly more forthcoming. All those unanswered questions make these books just about as page-turning as they could possibly be. Kelsea is an incredible heroine—imperfect, complicated, occasionally selfish, but deeply principled, and I just loved her. Despite the mention of The Hunger Games on the cover, and despite the fact that Kelsea is a teenager, this trilogy feels very adult fantasy to me, so calibrate your expectations accordingly.
4.5 stars! It started out a little slow but I’m sooo glad I pushed through. I loved all the characters and the world itself was quite fascinating. Also, the cover of this book is so eye-catching! Loved it!

I'm only about 40% done with this audio book and I'm enjoying the story so far. I listen to it while I exercise. This audio book is read by Katherine Kellgren who has a beautiful voice and accent, but I find her narration to be a little too dramatic and over-the-top for my personal taste. Still, Miss Kellgren has an undeniably pleasant voice, so I'll keep listening and see where the story goes.
--- Update ---
I got 70% through the audio book and finally stopped. I'm not a big fan of political/court intrigue and that's what this book is. I personally prefer adventure fantasies so this just wasn't my cup of tea. Those who enjoy stories of the machinations and all the jockeying for position that happen within a royal court will probably like this book.
Note: This story has adult content and crude language that I found dissonant in a fantasy book. Again, that's just my own personal taste. The Queen of the Tearling is not suitable for younger readers.

I loved this book, the world building and characters and politics were all wonderfully delightful to read. I've heard complaints that the world building is not realistic - however as much as there are oddities about the technology within the books if you go in thinking of the book as the fantasy novel it is where anything is possible it's not so ludicrous as things may appear

Pretty solid YA fantasy. Not interested in reading more of the series.
