I read this because its on so many best books of the year lists. I kept going because I thought it might get better, there might be an ending that twisted enough to qualify it for the lists. In the end, it was completely forgettable, with characters that never seemed more than sketches to me. The reflections on violence and loneliness suggested there was interesting intent behind the story, but it wasn't there enough to make the book work for me.
A bit surprised that I actually liked this book. I'm just trying to figure out why, lol. I do have one burning question though, so if you do too, find my spoiler review of it with me on LITSY as @sydsavvy and we'll have us a nice old hidden conversation.

I kept waiting for it to get good and it never did.
emma cline did it once again. i don’t think anything can beat the guest, but this was great. it invoked all of the creepy emotions that cults should invoke. ultimately, i just love emma cline🫶

I felt like I should have loved this book, but the narrative remove really denied any emotional connection for me. I thought the specific unease of female teenage-dom was written so well, but for a story told in reflection, I wanted much more about the lasting impact of this truly life-changing experience. I also found the author’s adjective choices really distracting!
Very compelling and dark. I could not stop reading it and at the same time did not want to continue. The narrator truly lost herself in the character of Evie Boyd and the isolation that pushed adolescent Evie towards Suzanne and the girls was well portrayed.
It was just ok. I didn't really buy why the protagonist was drawn in to the group and I also kind of expected more scandal and drama. Maybe I've been reading too many twisty fiction books lately but it was just meh.
Užstrigau kažkaip 😀 Primena Once “Upon a Time in Hollywood” - vaibai superiniai, bet kažkokio konkretaus veiksmo kaip ir nėra. Gražus, vaizdingas rašymo stilius, tikrai transportuoja į tą laikotarpį, bet labai trūmsta gryno veiksmo, įvykių.
