Ahhh- the title just says it all, doesn't it? I'd hate to think if F. Scott Fitzgerald was alive today, he'd be writing soaps for major networks. Yet if he did, this book would translate well into a script for ABC. Not sure how I feel about that.
Fitzgerald is one of my favorite writers- I always thought he wrote prose like Coltrane played the sax. And being an unapologetic romantic, I ate up his storylines like candy, for lack of a better analogy. But this book was just way too sweet, as sadly, some of Mr. Fitzgerald's stuff tend to be. Sometimes, declaring your undying love for someone while sitting on his lap- um, every few pages- can be a bit much. So much that I was naughty and didn't finish the last few pages.
And yes, F. Scott Fitzgerald gets three stars anyway just for being F. Scott Fitzgerald. It's a cruel world.

"Life is so damned hard, so damned hard... It just hurts people and hurts people, until finally it hurts them so that they can't be hurt ever any more. That's the last and worst thing it does.”

Fitzgerald is a master at tying the characters to their environments. So much of this novel describes various settings, but he's able to describe them to match the mood of the characters. You know how they're feeling and what their state of mind is before you're told what's going on in their lives. It's pretty great. It's also fairly dense, so it takes a while to get through

So like here's the deal with classics like Fitzgerald. They are a /trip/ to read, because like... Fitzgerald himself is just such a specimen, you know? Not a great guy. And then, he writes this beautiful story about how wealth, beauty, temporary happiness and status can fade to nothing in a heartbeat, and the temptation of "just enjoying life". There's some so fun themes unpacked in it, but the thing IS, this isn't like a "man who learned better" story, it's just....a man who 'learned' but then just drank his problems away. This isn't a story with main characters you adore.
So yes, I really like Fitzgerald's stories, I'd recommend them to any lover of classics, but just know going in that....the main characters are /so obnoxious/. At time's they are hilariously obnoxious, or they say such emotionally abusive, manipulative, or sexist things to eachother that I don't know how to react. That being said...isn't that just the dark side of humanity?
