I understand this is a YA novel and I read primarily NA, but this felt a little insulting to young adults. It was definitely written more for middle schoolers, which is absolutely fine, it’s just strange to read about characters who are turning 18 in language that reads for 10-13 year olds. It was extremely repetitive and needed a big edit. Lots of plot holes, things that didn’t make sense, and redundancy.

It was cute and still a fun read, but to compare it with the princess diaries was very inaccurate. It was an easy read and I didn’t have to think much about it, which was good.

I’m just sooo confused how these countries can be so damn progressive for women’s rights and queer rights…but then arranged marriages are a thing? What?

This is a cute book, there's no doubt there. The love story between the two princes, if not a little overbearing in parts, is sweet. Jamie and Erik are in love, and seeing them come together in what is a fast burn story is great. Though, this book has some flaws which can grate, deeply, despite the cuteness I enjoyed. So much of the book, as silly as it sounds considering the fantastical plot, is just unbelievable. Some of the major story beats just don't make sense.

Firstly, Eric's granny, The Queen, doesn't want him to be involved in a scandal, and yet she sends him to be a part of what has to be one of the largest scandals ever seen. A hidden prince from a past love? Do you really want your Grandson looking like he knew about it?

Secondly, a lot of the plot revolves around Jamie's desire that he's going to be returning home to finish school. He thinks that he and Eric have an expiry date. Really, Jamie, Mr Prince, you really think you're going to be safe in a public high school?

Thirdly, when Jamie has a garden party for a charity, he claims to be going up against a bullying prime minister. If that was bullying, well.... What we have is a rather sloppy caricature of the homophobic conservative, that we really don't see homophobia from. We are told that he's cut funding from an LGBT centre, but we never really she his hostility towards the community. He's part of the story for like two chapters, he's simply there to make Jamie look like a becon of hope and acceptance; to give Jame is purpose.

And, finally, the whole Max side plot was rather annoying. Wow, really girl, you got new listeners, poor you. And it didn't even climax? I thought atleast she'd do something in anger, but it was really just for drama. Why not have her leak the relationship? Why not have her be a catalyst for Jamie's change from a celebrity Prince into a real hard working royal upon the realisation he hurt her.

There were also some stylistic choices that were quite irritating. For example, things tended to get repeated alot. Two instances that come to mind.

The book says, 'Mom and Mike left the room.' Then two paragraphs later, it says 'Erik and I are alone, seen as Mike and Mom left the room.' Like, nah, really, didn't notice.

Another point where this can be seen is when Jamie tells Erik he wants to come back to live in the country after school. He tells him so, and then in the next chapter, just a few pages later, Erik talks about how Jamie has told him he wants to move back. The exact words are, 'Jamie told me he wants to...' Like, yes, we know. It could have easily been formated to seem like a more natural stream of conciseness.

Again, cute story, but it depends if you can get passed the illogical bits. Illogical not just in the real world, which can be over looked, but the story world.

And by the way, Eric. No, your Grandma didn't say she just wanted to see you fight for Jamie. You said that.
