I read a few passages since the book came out, but as I met Dan in person this weekend I thought it was time to read it front to back.
And what can I say? Of course, nothing in this book is revolutionary, most of it I knew. My mental health problems are not miraculously cured now. But, the book does not promise a miracle cure. Instead, it’s a book of approachable tips for when you’re struggling, depending on how immediate your problems are.
What I liked about it is that it is realistic. I guess it has to do with how Dan himself has struggled with mental health issues, but the tips are vastly approachable (at least in my opinion). A lot of the times I feel like that tips on how to improve your mental state are impossible to adhere to when you’re struggling (no shade but I once told my therapist I had anxiety in social situations so I didn’t know what to do after school when everything was overwhelming and she told me to simply get a job and that would just work itself out. Thanks for nothing I guess.).
I also liked that the book did not condemn medication. For me, personally, antidepressants have hugely improved my everyday life and I think that, when discussed with a doctor beforehand, they can genuinely help.
Anyway, I’m ranting again. I haven’t read that many books on mental health but I genuinely found this helpful. We all need reminders that we’re not alone.

I read this because I'm a fan of Dan and Phil, and I was one of those people expecting a sort of memoir from Dan here, but like he mentioned, is there anything he hasn't shared already?
I was hesitant to read a self-help book as I personally have issues with those, but I really liked the science based approach he took mixed with personal experiences and his typical comedy. I think I could go back to some of the exercises if I need them. I read this with an audiobook because I knew I wouldn't get through it by myself and having Dan, a guy I already really like listening to, narrate it definitely made the experience very enjoyable, felt like it was just a long video from him.
I would recommend this book if someone from the self help and personal growth side of reading asked me for recommendations. This book would've been really important to me in my darkest days, and today it still had lessons and reminders I sometimes forget in my darkest times. Thank you Dan.

Enjoyable look at mental health. I listened to the audiobook. Well read. Easy to follow. Plenty to think about.

4.5/5
This was a really good read. The book covers basic things regarding mental health and a lot of practical exercises. Those who know more about mental health will also find something useful for themselves. Dan provides examples based on his own experiences and includes jokes and references to different events/memes, which makes the whole thing more relatable. You will be probably called out a lot of times as it should be, but that's why there are trigger warnings at the beginning, which is awesome. This book was constructed in a way that allows readers to choose what they want to engage with at the moment. You can pick it at any time and do exercises and don't have to read through the whole thing if it doesn't resonate with you.
I love the design of this book. Everything was divided into small parts, which was easy to read, and the whole thing was so aesthetically pleasing. It was a delight just to look at everything.
The book is a very helpful, relatable and practical guide. It won't solve all your problems and it say so itself, but it's a great guide for those who want to make the change in their life.

Honestly, Dan did a great job summarizing key, actionable takeaways from therapies like CBT and DBT. Even the title itself is hugely comforting... in the end we just have to get through this day, this night. And we will. You will get through this night.
The audiobook version is SUPERB, especially if you're a fan of his YouTube career.

had a great time listening to the audiobook and anytime i was feeling emotionally conflicted about anything id just turn it on and while some stuff felt like common sense to my personal day to day life i know there are people that are just learning about how to handle their own mental health and this is a fantastic source to go to. i will definitely go back and listen to individual chapters anytime i need a reminder on things so shout out to old danny boy for busting out the one liners that would unexpectedly make me reevaluate the way i view my own life
