The premise of this book had a lot of potential, but ultimately fell flat with lackluster characters, flat dialogue, and a plot that boiled down to "you should believe in gods." It didn't help that the audiobook reader for this was doing terrible voices for everyone--it made every character seem hopelessly annoying.
There were certain aspects of this story I liked, but the whole time I just kept thinking that if this had been in the hands of a better writer then it could've shined. As is, I'm glad to be done with this.

i guess i liked the worldbuilding of this book, like the idea of ancient greek gods living in modern day london is funny and interesting. i felt the plot fell through. i don’t know why Alice had to forgive Apollo in the end. i also was dissapointed with the ending because what so the greek gods are now back in power. why are they the only gods that are real? i know Neil Gaiman isn’t a vibe anymore but i just don’t buy into the idea that the ancient greek gods are the only real gods, even in this fictional sense. seems way too simplified. i think this book was more just for the humour and absurdity, and less actually about engaging with ancient myth in a modern way, if that makes sense. not my fave book but probably good research for my own novel.

Do you remember your Greek Gods and Goddesses? No? Well, neither do most people and that fact has allowed them to live amongst us humans since the rise of Christianity effectively removed them from power. A majority of them, in fact, live in London holding down jobs like dog walker (Artemis), television psychic (Apollo), bar owner (Dionysus), and phone sex operator (Aphrodite). Oh and they don't really hold humans in high regard. One day, as a prank, Aphrodite has sex-hound Apollo struck with an arrow that will make him fall irrevocably in love with a human. This human turns out to be Alice, a shy cleaner who is stuck in a will-they/won't-they relationship with a guy named Neil. Her love for Neil naturally means she's not interested in Apollo, but Apollo is not one to take "no" for an answer.
Marie Phillips has pulled together a lot of great mythical research as well as personal conjecture in her debut novel. The result is a well-crafted, modern-day Perseus or Orpheus tale with more than just a bit of dry wit. A very enjoyable and quick read.
