“Just because I don’t yet believe doesn’t meant I haven’t tried.”

Thank you to Penguin Random House Audio and Dutton Books for the ALC in exchange for an honest review!

This book gave me a little bit of the true crime vibes with Billy’s disappearance and how it rattled the community. With Ethan, he was with Billy the night he disappeared and has internalized this guilt his entire life. He suffered from insomnia and becomes consumed with Billy’s disappearance when he returns to live in his childhood home.

The first half of this book definitely feels a bit stronger than the second. It felt like it really hit the ground running with background information and setting up the overall creepiness. I liked that Ethan goes on his own journey as he tries to make sense of what happened three decades ago. He comes to terms with a lot of his past by the time the book ends. I also very much appreciated the What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? reference.

It’s a good thriller and the audiobook is really well done. Santino Fontana does such a great job with the material, bringing out emotion and depth in the characters.
