4.5 because nothings perfect & King struggles to write dialogue between teenage girls, but WOW!

Honestly, I think I just need to accept that King is one of my favorite authors and that his books will blow me away every time. I put off reading this one for a long time, who wanted to needed a sequel to a classic like the Shining?!? My expectations were low and this book absolutely blew them away.

Years after the ordeal at the Overlook, Dan Torrance is now all grown up and following in his father's footsteps. We start our story just before he attempts to get clean and meets a child whose shine is as strong if not stronger than his was at its prime. Dan's turn to be a mentor is thrust upon him and the struggle that ensues between his new ward and a group that wants her shine for themselves is intense.

A journey through self loathing, living with our choices, confronting trauma, and (to use one of my all time favorite quotes) being the person you needed when you were younger, Dr. Sleep is haunting and beautiful all at once. While I did find it light on the true horror elements, it will still give you some good scares and leave you thinking about it for a long time.

Highly Recommend.

This was one of the best Stephen King books that I’ve read. Better than the shining in my opinion. The AA stuff was so good. Where the Shining is about how denial eats Jack Torrance, Doctor Sleep is how healing saves Dan Torrance. Intergenerational trauma gets a happy ending.

Sidebar: Mike Flannigan’s movie version of doctor sleep gives somehow even more depth than the book. The movie scene that is not in the book where Dan gets to talk to Jack in the overlook was too good and so necessary. Highly recommend the directors cut of the film.

It also felt a little weird to make Dan and Abra actually be related. I liked it more when he was helping her just because she was another person who could shine. It meant more in my opinion.

Also good on Mike taking out the grandma and the knot all dying from sped up cancer.

Even more good on Mike for having the overlook ghosts battle Rose. I expected that in the book and was a bit let down when it didn’t happen. What a wicked and wonderful scene!

Another rare case where the movie is better than the book.

It's definitely not a sequel to The Shining. It's not a bad stand alone book either. I think this book merits a three and a half stars and unfortunately you can't give half a star ratings here but surely I am convinced that I wouldn't round it up to a four. I am probably much of a scaredy cat that's why it kept me at edge of my seat but it was somehow missing the good ol' Stephen King horror. I was also expecting more Danny in this book. Anyway, at the end of the day, I still enjoyed this book. Although I don't think I am ready to venture on the newer works of Stephen King because I am afraid I'll be disappointed.

4.75 stars!
I know a lot of fans of “The Shining'' doesn't really enjoy this book. But I really enjoyed it! I’m a big fan of Mike Flanagan’s version of “Doctor Sleep” so I wanted to read the book. And oh boy did the boy not disappoint! I loved it! I love how we can see how Danny turned out after “The Shining”. The storytelling was great! The plot was great and the characters were amazingly built! I loved Abra and I hated the Knot! I would say that I loved the end of the movie more than the book, but the ending of the book is also amazing!
I would recommend this book to fans of both “The shining” movie and the book.

Stephen King is a fantastic storyteller, and he just gets better with every book he writes. I just have to say one thing - please do not think of Doctor Sleep as a sequel to The Shining, because it is an excellent novel in its own right and should be respected as such.
