The only question is whether this is the greatest novel of all time. Dense beyond belief, recursive, brutal, and often overwhelming. I have read nothing like it.
A book that makes me want to lop off stars from nearly every other book I've ever read, as they're not worthy. Still, as a huge fan of challenging lit, this is about as hard as it gets. It is 400 pages of unremitting focus, best read in a short period of time and with a pen and post its handy. You need a System to grasp this book.
12 stars.

It's good. It's certainly a masterwork. At the moment, I still prefer [b:The Sound and the Fury|10975|The Sound and the Fury|William Faulkner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1433089995l/10975._SY75_.jpg|1168289], but this is a good one. I will have to come back to it later, as the density of the text made it a lot harder for me to really absorb it.
It's good, I'm just not 100% in the right mental space to really conquer it.

I admit it freely...I did not, could not, finish this book. I think that while the idea is an interesting one with a lot of Faulkner's writing, the execution, though technically staggering, is simply torture to read. I'd picked up a collection of four novels of Faulkner's and this was the first one in the book...and I'd read "Sound and the Fury" in high school for a major thesis paper...but I just could not flog myself through this book.
Instead, I quit half-way through and read "The Unvanquished" and LOVED it. Entirely different writing style and a GREAT Southern Gothic story.

The South is a mess. It always has been and it probably always will be. Centuries of hatreds, racism and bigotries steeped in gentility to try to make it smell better has not seemed to change a whole lot.
