2016 review:
It was a lot better than I expected it to be. Sure it is racist as well as sexist, but the story-line is really good. I was really surprised about the depth of the story. For example D'Arnot is a really nice character, who is completely omitted from the story in Disney's Tarzan. I'm almost motivated to read the sequel but I've heard that it's rather disappointing so I don't think I will read it. Especially because there are 22 of them.

I really enjoyed this book for the most part. He has a good way of writing that keeps you wanting to continue on, however, the last 50 pages it was like a rush to the finish that ends so quickly and unexpectedly that I was a little upset. May be a while before I move on to his next book.
Hmm... apparently there is a reason why I read these as a 9/10 year old...
This is pure pulp fantasy and adventure but it's thrilling. Especially at the beginning with the jungle stuff I loved the way it was written. The animals came to life and it was exotic and atmospheric. It's one of those iconic classics so worth reading for that. Lord Greystoke, later named Tarzan, is stranded on an island as a baby and he is brought up by apes. The story goes on to how he gets re-introduced to civilisation via people who get stranded on the island, including the beautiful Jane Porter whom Tarzan falls in love with. Please note that I didn't take it too seriously and bore in mind that it's of its time (trust me, in the future people will look back and think 'what a lot of bullshit & not based on facts' about a lot of currently culturally accepted ideas).
For example, how Tarzan learns to read by himself, or naturally comes to human ideas by himself, which is not what actually happens in cases of children brought up in the wild or when isolated - there is a lot more social collaboration than people realise. There was plenty to make me feel uncomfortable about the kind of cultural attitudes and ideas Tarzan had and the whole Tarzan and Jane thing is a little painfully stereotypical (weak woman, strong male protector) but the book has a lot of charm and is not bad-hearted. Some of the issues it brought up with regard to honour and with Jane's relationships with men were interesting. 3.5/5.

An easy read with some great points of adventure. A mostly fun jaunt of a book. It's hard to get past the blatant racism that takes up a significant portion of the book. Im not a fan of the ending.
