The first half of the book is a bunch of random vignettes that jump around in time and aren't really about anything. The second half has more of a narrative arc. The story is sweet but not deep. I may have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been 20 years since I read the first one because I didn't remember any of the characters.
gorgeous yet simple meditation on human connection through generations. reading this series felt like getting tucked into bed after a summer day at the lake
My mom read Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe to me in elementary school, and it’s remained one of my all time favorite books since then. I have this tattered copy I’ve read so many times that I brought with me to my dorm room. It used to say “booker picker book club pick #1” on the inside cover, but the cover was torn off. Ruth and Idgie (the lesbians that ran the cafe in the 1920s) mean more to me than any other characters period.
I had no idea Flagg wrote a follow up book until today. I listened to the entire thing on 2x speed and finished it in one day. It follows Bud Threadgoode, Ruth and Idgies son, who is now an old man. It def wasn’t comparable to the original, but it did make me weep over my graphic design project. My teacher was concerned, guys .
Idk but I think everyone should read fried green tomatoes and I think I’m going to reread it now.

The Wonder Boy is Buddy, the son of Rose from Fried Green Tomatoes. The book continues with his life up to present day. Evelyn Couch, the Kathie Bates character, is back and this time she takes on the role of helping out a younger woman. A very enjoyable read on its own or after Fried Green Tomatoes.

So sweet. I fell in love with Ruthie and her dad, Bud. Love Fannie Flagg’s writing too.
I listened to this via my Libby app, and I enjoyed the telling. I love listening to Fannie Flagg books, as she's always the narrator of her own work. Occasionally I found it more difficult to follow the time jumps than if I were reading a printed version, but it didn't really hinder the experience. Though it lacked some of the charm of "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe," I loved stepping back into this place with these characters. Definitely a "comfort read" for me, which is just what I was looking for.
