Solid debut novel. Took the unreliable narrator to an extreme, but worked it in with the story. Good pickup from BOTM.

I love a haunted house and am a sucker for a gorgeous cover. And that’s the extent of nice things I can say about this book.

The writing was lame. That’s the only way to describe it. I absolutely laughed out loud at some parts, specifically when she was describing her thoughts to herself. Like how she was crawling on the floor and told herself she wasn’t a cat. And the sudden jarring time jumps which confused an already muddled plot.

But damn that’s one gorgeous cover.

This is a great debut novel. It isn’t just a solid thriller (full of twists, escalating tension, all the good stuff) but also a very refreshing take on millennial anxieties. It’s a little uneven and tries to do too many things at once, but at its core it’s a really fun and inspired modern ghost story. The star of the show (and what really sold the book for me) is messy social media grifter Sarah Slade, an iconic protagonist and first-person narrator. The author really nails her voice and gives us a pretty thoughtful exploration of her messed up character and her struggles. Looking forward to more Lisa Matlin books!

I definitely recommend this one if you’re into character-driven thrillers, doomscrolling, and slowly accepting the fact that you’ll never be able to buy a house unless someone was brutally murdered in it

3-3.5, maybe 4 stars.

Intriguing read with an unreliable narrator - primarily a combination of a traumatic past, loneliness, maybe misuse of prescription medication, and alcohol.

Our MC has convinced her husband to buy a much hated house with a tragic past in a quiet neighborhood in Melbourne, Australia. There are rumors the house itself drove the previous occupants to madness. The neighbors would like the house destroyed. Some things are left to the imagination.

The author’s note at the end is worthwhile to read (even if you weren’t the right reader for the story).

CWs: question of infidelity, possible animal cruelty

I liked this and I feel like I kind of *get* if people dont but like it was good. I read it on audio and it’s the way to go. There was some stuff that was strange and I felt like realistically when would the MC not investigate further but other than that I enjoyed this! 4 stars!

If I had a dollar for every thriller I'd read with an unhinged female main character, I'd be rich. I really hate this trope and hope it burns a fiery death.

This book is a quick read but I wish the twist was better.

Meh. It was okay! And decent. But compared to other psychological thrillers , I didn’t love this one.

. This book was a crazy ride. I for the life of me could not figure out what was going on. Although I had several theories, I was pretty much wrong. It was  creepy, weird, suspenseful thriller that I really enjoyed!
