I think somehow I'm out of order bc I really enjoyed this but don't remember some of those plotlines? But also Maria V. Snyder writes so well that I don't know that it matters that I only knew half of what was going on... Oops! To go back or not
- I'm not a fan of the cover. I love the covers of the Study series and the Glass series. This cover doesn't portray the story very well, and it looks rudimentary.
- I'm a HUGe fan of these books, but this book didn't seem up to par.
- The writing seemed elementary at times. There were a lot of short sentences, and several points and thoughts were repeated.
- I liked learning about Valek's history a lot, but I felt like it should have been a separate book or done differently. The different stories would have made a nice novella.
- Valek's flashbacks seemed a little out of place. He was super busy and barely had time to sleep, but he spent a lot of time reminiscing.
- The book is told from a few different perspectives, and I wish it had all been done from Yelena's perspective.
- I loved reading about these characters that I love, and I liked going on another adventure with them.
- There wasn't as much action as I hoped for. Most of the book is traveling and gathering information.
- Not a lot happened throughout the book to move the plot forward. There was a lot of back and forth.
- Despite all of my complaints, I did enjoy the book, and I'm excited for more books about Yelena and the gang.

Unlike the last two books in the series, this one actually had a decent plot, which honestly doesn’t even matter at this point since I’m reading this for the characters. I feel like I should have read the series about Opal before I started reading this one, but it’s all good I’ll just go back and read it later. I was really glad that there were different POVs in this book, it was kind of nice to see other perspectives that weren’t Yelena. I especially liked learning about Valek’s childhood or rather his assassin training. I’m curious to see what’s going on with the commander and whether or not he ends up being a “bad guy”.
Sometimes I feel that some book are written simply because the original series went so well and the author wants more money. However, this book really was amazing. Though Fire Study finished thing off quite well, the sequel still fit and was not just a repeated storyline. It was interesting book, and left me hoping for another.
So I was a bit worried when I picked up this book in my favourite bookseller's mainly because I adored the Study series and my second encounter with Snyder's work, the Avry of Kazan series, left me rather disappointed. Shadow study does not disappoint, however, and anyone who has read the Study series should start reading this with no worries because it's just as much of a page turner as we've been used to. Beware, it ends in a cliff hanger! Awesome book, however.
Sadly the ending disappoints. It pains me to write that because Yelena and the Study trilogy are dear favourites of mine.
I didn't know how I felt at first with it jumping between the three different perspectives but I rather enjoyed seeing the other characters side of emotions and I enjoy seeing Valeks side as well it makes him more human. There were a handful of times that I laughed at Jancos commentary.
Really, Maria V. Snyder??? You had to end on that note??? And make us wait until the next book to know what happens?? Why do you torture us so? But really, I *cannot* say enough good things about this book. Exciting, sexy, hilarious. Simply wonderful. Loved every word of it.
2.5 stars.
Once again, Valek has been reduced to little more than an extremely punctual savior. I think all the reminiscing could've made a better story for another book. Lots of questions were left unanswered and some businesses unfinished. The quality of the writing seemed to have deteriorated. While the POV switching was refreshing, the mixup of the first person and the third person narratives didn't quite feel right. Btw, the ending had a predictable twist. Saw it coming from the beginning.
Good stuff: The plot was quite good. The best character was undoubtedly the Commander.
Looking forward to the next book!
