Utterly captivating like all Snyders books. So happy to be back with Yelena and Valek and Janco. Plenty of action and intrigue as always. Kept me thoroughly mesmerised til the last word and now I desperately need book 2.... Do we really have to wait til 2016?!!!
I always love diving back into this world. I especially loved this book because you find out so much more about Valek. You find out about his past and how he trained to be the master assassin that he is. You learn so much about him and it helps to understand his character better. I also liked this book a lot because it was told from multiple perspectives. There are three perspectives and they are Yelena, Valek, and Janco. Reading the Janco chapters were very entertaining and him and Ari will continue to be two of my favorite characters in this entire series. The plot of this story is entertaining and there are a few plot twists in it that I enjoyed. I am very curious to see what happens next and I can't wait to start the next book. I give Shadow Study 5 out of 5 stars.
I really enjoyed this book as with the first 3! Having 3 separate POVs can be amazing if written correctly. However with this book the different POVs made it seem super rushed and like you were missing something important. Other than that the book was amazing!
This was another good book in the series. I was excited to see that it continued the timeline of Ixia and Sitia without reiterating any things happening during the stories where Opal was the main character, other than some of the usual retelling to remind readers of an important character or plot incident. I am excited to continue on in the story!
Ehhhhh. I was really excited at the start of this book, to get back into this world and spend more time with these characters. So many things happened so quickly at the start! And then the plot got slow and the constantly shifting viewpoints annoyed me and Valek's flashbacks, while interesting, always came at inconvenient times... Not to mention the return of Devlen (ugh), which at this point seems forced and unnecessary. Everything in this book just feels... recycled. Even the "shocker" of an ending was something I called from the start, because what ELSE would you do with this kind of story?
I know Snyder wrote this series (sub-series?) because her fans wanted more, but I feel like that shows and it leaves me a little disappointed. I didn't particularly enjoy the Glass books, and I guess I was really hoping that this series would be a return to what I loved about Poison Study. But... not the case so far.

I absolutely adored the original Study trilogy, particularly ‘Poison Study’ so when I heard that there were going to be more books in the series I, like most other fans of the books, was thrilled.
And whilst it was fantastic to be back with Yelena and Valek and co. sadly the book didn’t quite live up to the very high expectations I had.
It’s become a worrying trend with the last few Snyder books that I will tear into them eagerly, my interest will wane and then at around the half way mark I will put them down and go and read something else, which is tragic. They are such good stories, but the first half of each of the latest books is so slow and weighed down with story and exposition that isn’t needed that nothing really happens. Eventually I come back to them, and the second half is so much better, everything picks up the stakes get higher, the tension is raised and I am reminded of all the reasons that I love Snyder’s books. Shadow Study is no exception to this new trend. The first half was so slow, so much back and forth and no one really knowing what’s going on or what to do and a lot of that leads from Yelena’s feeling of being adrift and lost, but the story shouldn’t be impacted this heavily by that. There should still be action, forward progress and a level of interest retained by the reader. So I took weeks to read the first half and eventually took a break from the book altogether.
The second half was so much better though. The storylines started coming together, and whilst everyone’s individual journeys were important, everything works so much better when everyone is together. The tension is amped, everything felt more terrifying and real and I was flying through the end of the book.
