I enjoyed this book! There is so much change that needs to happen regarding undocumented citizens in America. I was glad that I was able to listen to this book and got to hear Jose's story. I felt for Jose throughout this book. All he wanted to do was learn all he could, be a good journalist, and a productive member of society. I highly recommend Dear America. It is a read that is worth your while and the reader can learn a lot from Jose's story!

i really enjoyed this book & think it’s an important read. jose is unapologetic and shares stories of what it’s like to live in a country that doesn’t want you. i think there could have been less name drops and specific information which was a bit lost on me but overall it was a very engaging read!!!

Eye opening and heart breaking, with information about immigration law interspersed with personal story... Should be required reading for anybody working with or friends with immigrants, anybody in immigration law, and honestly anybody living in the US. As a white immigrant whose family got lucky in the green card lottery, it was hard for me to understand what undocumented immigrants were and why they couldn't just do what we did for the longest time. A college education helped lift the veil, but this book made it utterly palpable. 100% recommend!

Amazing what I don’t know about immigration!

A book I feel every person, especially Americans, should read. I only wish I had read it sooner. Jose’s story is a personal account of what it is like to be undocumented in the United States. But further, this book is a story about home. Hearing Jose narrate the audiobook added that much more to this work.

The whole book was great but those last few chapters I can't even think of the best word to describe. Insightful? Educational? Eye-opening? None of those feel like the right descriptor. But I'd recommend this book to everyone. If you don't know anything about immigration or undocumented people in the US, this is a great place to start. If you think of yourself as an expert on the topic, then this first person narrative offers a unique perspective and is absolutely worth the read, no matter your stance on the topic.

What a journey this author has been through. What an amazing education on immigration, its contributions to our country, and on the laws. I never fail to be blown away by how little most people know about this topic.

So, this book was impossible to put down. Engaging, compelling, and deeply powerful. Vargas has opened himself up and has told his truth. The truth of systemic oppression and imperialism and white supremacy that haunts him as it haunts so many undocumented Americans, and as it haunts all of us - because we’re all caught in this system. Fantastic book.
