1) This is one person's story. No single story can be representative of an entire population. But it's a very powerful story.
2) Even though this book was only published two years ago, I wish I could have read it decades ago.
3) We need to be gentle. There is a time and place for force. We need to be forceful in seeking truth, in standing for people, and against inequitable systems & ideologies. But we need to be gentle with each other and ourselves. With all the humans we come across. Because we have no idea.
4) Everyone should read this book. Not as an anthem of immigrant experience. But to confront one man's experience being nationless. Stories have power and allow us to engage with issues from a humanizing position that can break the chains of "othering" and objectification.
5) We should just stop being ignorant dicks (I'm still working on #3).

I couldn’t put this book down. Jose understands and tells his story in a gravitational way that’s both excruciating and inspiring. I laughed and cried. This book is informative and honest and I highly recommend it.

I don’t feel right reviewing memoirs, especially one I knew so little about. The voice of a reporter and a guarded person comes through in a vulnerable memoir. I struggled with the timeline and pacing at times with some of the jumps (partially due to my unfamiliarity). This book left me with a lot of points to think on and a deeper understanding of what is meant by and the logic behind ‘no human being is illegal’
Review to come, after I’ve had time to sit down and gather my thoughts!
This book was so compelling. I confess exactly the person he described. Liberal who thinks I get it but really has no understanding of how immigration works in this country. Very eye-opening and I want to learn more. I think seeing immigration through the eyes of a human being that is living it everyday makes a big difference.
