This won't be my last Erin Mainord book! I loved how quickly I became invested in this world she built -- a world in the middle of a war, on the brink of changing tides.
Erin's world is dark, dangerous, and full of shifting alliances that leave everyone out for themselves first and foremost. The plot, which starts as a simple escape from enemies, woman on the run, quickly turns into a darker exploration of war and political intrigue that had me racing toward the end and right over the cliff.
Wren is such a fun character to follow -- as a blood witch she grapples with some pretty deep emotions. It was fun to watch her find her place between the drive to give into the blood witch power and remain a bit of her soul in the process. She is such an emotionally raw character who has been through so much that it is easy to root for her to find her power and her balance.
Singard -- Wren's captor and ruler -- plays a dangerous game through the whole book. He's secretive, morally grey, and just a touch of reckless. All the while you can't help but support him as he works to help Wren find her balance in life.

I also listened to audiobook version of this book, so I cannot leave out my applause for this duo. Anytime I see Jacci Prior as a narrator, I know I am in good hands. She does smoky and sexy so well and she just adds so much depth to the FMCs story and words. Truly, having her voice Wren was a fantastic pairing. Her range was inspired and helped the reader tap into both Wren's rage and sadness.
Also -- Jacci's narration paired with James Cavanaugh's male voices. This first my first time hearing James do a fantasy romance (he's voiced some of my fave rom-coms). I need him to do more FANTASY. The deep of the male characters' voice! Spot on and so different from the voices he uses in rom-coms. Sin's voice -- A plus.
Together, this duo did a fantastic job of drawing the reader into Erin's world and bringing life to the Wren, Sin, and the rest of the characters. I'm hooked!

What did the author put in this book!?!??! I'm obsessed (and heartbroken).
We start the book with Wren, a bloodwitch who refuses to let the darkness claim her soul. She's been in hiding her entire life, but when she's captured by Legion, Wren is forced to live her worst nightmare. After a series of events she'll find herself trading her former captor to being in the clutches of the Black Art, Singard, the wicked leader of the Kingdom. They'll end up in a tentative understanding. She'll help him defeat the kingdom's enemies, while Sin will help her find her sister.
But things tend to become very complicated when it involves these two...
Wren, I LOVE HER!!! She is fierce, and loyal to a fault. After everything she's gone through, she loves fiercely and will not let anyone harm her loved ones. I really liked that she never faltered in her believes and how she battles her inner demons.
Sin, SINGARD OH MY LORD. I have so many mixed feelings towards you. I LOVE YOU BUT WHY??!?!? WHYYYYYYY?!?!?!? (IYKYK). Apart from THAT, I really liked his character. I loved that we get to see another side of him, one that he keeps hidden behind layers and layers.
I can't wait to read book 2 and get to know more of these characters, SPECIALLY after THAT ending... I'm still recovering.
I would 100% recommend this book!!
Love you all and happy reading 💋💋

That was very good. Yes. Very enjoyable. Ending was favourite bit
This dark romantic fantasy took me on a ride and I absolutely enjoyed all the twists and secrets revealed by the end. I did not see the ending coming and am so intrigued by what will happen in the next book!
The nicknames that the FMC and MMC had for each other had me feral. She calls him "Blackheart" (that tattoo... OOH!) and he calls her "Little Witch" and another more tender one later... Their banter was delicious and very fun to read.
I thought the magic system was cool, but felt like I needed to know more! I would have enjoyed having more details on how their magic all works, both on their own and also when combined. I was intrigued and would've appreciated more info.

The book starts off strong. Fighting your inner demons, literally. But it gets so annoying half way though.
**Spoilers
The "banter" between them is stupid. I didn't feel an once of kicking, giggling and smiling at the pages you should get. One minute they are angry and yelling insults the next im wondering how we got to them flirting and professing love.
And the fact that you make the FMC this badass witch and she's just a pawn annoys me so much. You want to make a badass woman lead, make her that! Why are we always making them fall for love like it's everyone's downfall? She has the power to read people and she shuts it off??? What are we doing...
The magic aspect is weird. We get high using magic? Needing to have sex to come down?
This book fell flat for me but had to power through just to see if the ending is exactly how you can predict in the beginning, which it is.
