The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton

It might be good if it had been edited down. It repeats information too often and meanders so much all suspense is lost. I don't normally mind a slow burn but this one just doesn't carry it off.

I wanted to love this book - I really loved 7 1/2, and figured this was similar. It was, in the sense that the end wrapped up very quickly to reveal everything. It just took too long to get there. I was bored.
The ending also seems incredibly unlikely - as if they would all go work together.

I didn't like this book as much as his debut book, I found that there was too much backsory that I had to go through in order to understand what's going on at present, and it just kept going on and on, I totally understand why the author did it otherwise we wouldn't be able to understandand or connect to the characters but I would have preferred the book to be shorter bc I pretty much only loved the ending while the rest of the book, while set in an interesting place was mediocre, there just wasn't enough intrigue in my opinion and the only thing keeping me from dnfing was bc I loved his other book so much.

HOWEVER the ending was absolutely insane, it blew my mind completely, I totally didn't expect it and I kind of want to read a sequel where what they say in the end happens!

I just wish I felt like that throught the book and not just right at the end especially bc this isn't a short book.

I really enjoyed this! Think Lord of the Flies meets Sherlock Holmes and you'll be close to the vibe - dark, gritty, and most definitely disturbing.

There were some twists I saw coming, but others that caught me off guard - but honestly none of them were unsatisfactory. I could see the breadcrumbs left behind, which is really the most important thing to me personally. I hate when there is a twist that you literally could never have guessed.

I can definitely understand why this book wouldn't be for everyone, but personally it had me in it's grip from cover to cover. The characters were interesting, the mystery had my attention, and the world building was small but accomplished exactly what it needed to. The genius daughter was a bit much, but was needed to allow the main character (and investigator) to not be effectively omniscient, so I can appreciate the way she was written and why.

Definitely one I'll recommend to friends and family and will likely revisit to see what I missed the first time!

Truly, I found this book to be pretty middling at best in terms of the writing and characters. Just A Standard Mystery Novel ™ that I’d give a standard 3.0 to. Then a twist on top of the twist got my ass in the last like. 5 pages of the book, and made me hoot and holler with delight. So it gets bumped up a bit in rating because it was just a fun little add on at the end there. Was it worth getting through the rest pf the book for? Probably not. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this book to anyone, but it isn't horrible by any means. Just nothing terribly spectacular.

Well written! Turton knows how to develop an atmosphere. The mystery, at times, seemed a bit hard to track but the protagonist and Samuel pypps made it easy to keep the intrigue alive. This was a great follow up book to his first book. Recommended.
