3.88 AVERAGE

Haha the dialogue and the spice is so goofy, but what a fun premise. After reading Practice Makes Perfect, I was curious about pirate romances, and I saw that my friend Emily recently read this one, so this is my first foray into the subgenre.

2.75 for the ending

Love the Beauty and the Beast trope. I appreciate that Julia Quinn can write a lead character that is endearing and not annoying. Andrew of course is the perfect mix of mystery, manliness, and romance (dreamy). The story finally gets some action near the end, but the whole book is riddled with delicious moments between Poppy and Andrew to keep the reader engaged. I felt that Poppy was a little too funny and smart (but who am I to ridicule) to be too relatable, but it was absolutely brilliant to demonstrate at the end that her main characteristic is strength.

Extremely do not know why I keep trying to like these books.

Fat shaming in Chapter 1

The maid could have just not been excited to follow around Poppy. It didn’t have to be because she was “plump.” Tried to soldier on but the plot really is so contrived I just couldn’t get into it.

I liked it until...

The end. I was enjoying the book. It wasn’t engrossing or riveting. It was enjoyable, light. Then chapter 19 happened. The end was annoying and quick and completely put in left field. It made the story less. Just a heads up.

As far as love stories go, I am usually not fond of pirate and kidnapping, but this was a Bridgerton's prequel so I had to read it. In the end the story of Andrew and Poppy was not so bad, full of bickering and funny situations, but I was looking forward to something special, and this nove is not so special, I am sorry....
