This is my "crying at the club" review.
Except I am just crying--no club. The noise and bustle around me makes me feel like I am at the club, but no. All that sound pales to the one of my own POUNDING HEART. I am a wreck.
Helloooo? I was not ready for this to sweep me off my feet. In fact I went into this BLIND. I had NO idea what I was in for. This was by far one of the most emotionally sweet reads of the year and it hit me slow and heavy like a damn forklift came and hauled my ass off the ground.
My heart and brain are so mushed up at this moment I need... I need a minute.
Summary: Atlantis meets Dragons meets Angsty Romance. That's it. That's all you get. The less you know, the better!

Thoughts: Honestly I only picked the book because the cover was so freaking pretty! And the story was just as amazing as the cover.
What I loved:
šTru- First of all amazing name! Second of all, visions through painting so cool! had me at ādemon turdsā š
šI would kill to travel underwater and talk with turtles and mermaids! Like give me all your beauty secrets please!
šElang- okay getting moody vibes but in like Iām longing for you but canāt make it obvious because of reasons.
šFamily drama! And family reunion! Thank god cause if Tru didnāt get her dad, Iād be rioting.
šShani- okay you took me for a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but you redeemed yourself in the end.
Overall 10/10 would recommend if youāre a fan of dragons, a bit of adventure, art, some romance, and HEA that has you tear up a bit.

Reading this took me on an adventure that I havenāt been in a long time.
This YA fantasy claims to be inspired by Beauty and the Beast, but I wouldnāt really describe it as such.
Elizabeth Lim had really honed her craft when it comes to writing a whimsical tale inspired by Chinese Mythology with talking sea creatures, mermaids, dragons, demons and a blue haired painter.
The character building was wonderful to follow, but the stand out here was the world building. I was enthralled with all the details and the importance placed on details like noodles or water bells.
The romance was classically beautiful with all the regret and longing one can hope for in a YA fantasy.
Highly recommend for fans of The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea.

Honestly, this is one of the most entrancing books I have read all year. I raced through these pages faster than Elang could dart through water. I will forever love everything to do with dragons and this story is so amazingly perfect. Having grown up with primarily western dragon fantasy, this book is such a refreshing take on dragons. I love the Eastern Asian flair and magnificence of the dragons.
The story at first impression reminded me of a reverse sort of Little Mermaid meets Beauty and the Beast, but it is also far more than that. The characters grew on me so much I burst into tears at the finale; twice even. Once from heartbreak and again in relief. Elizabeth Lim's writing is exquisite in the subtle clues scattered throughout the chapters. Everything comes together masterfully with nice surprises along the way.

Fairytale retellings arenāt usually my thing but this one just felt different. This is a Beauty & The Beast retelling. But this time, add magical paintings and Elizabeth Limās amazing storytelling to weave together a work Iād totally read again and again.
