This was a challenging book to get through. While I understand the use of the n-word, it was jarring to continually hear. Overall, the stories were enlightening to understand rural white America’s stories/perspective from the standpoint of a young boy who has both picked up on the social cues for what it means to be young, white, male/boy, and from the country.

read this for school and quite literally survived reading this because of the audiobook.
mark twain is a good storyteller, just not a good writer imo. but i do get that this was made to be in the 1800s, i just hated the writing

I'm all for reading banned books, but this is the first time I've listened to one. The narrator throws herself into Twain's dialect with gusto, but it is a bit much to listen to. Also, it's just uncomfortable to hear a White woman (evidently) repeatedly drop the N-word, even if she is voicing a 19th-century adolescent who would indeed have used that word. But if you have no other way to check out Twain's contribution to the US canon, it's not a bad option.

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for a digital ARC for the purpose of an unbiased review.

Despite the flawed and muddled ending, this is one of the great and true American novels.  Huck Finn is an Icon.  I don’t hold as much favor with Tom Sawyer as he is too much of the Romantic to Huck’s pragmatism.

I’ve probably read Huck Finn three or four times since my University days in the 80s.  There depth, wisdom, and humor in the novel.  This time around I read it as part of a banned book club.  While the obvious choice for banning is use of racist language, but as my University professor pointed out, Twain wasn’t writing with a racist agenda, far from it, and modern readers need to understand that racial slurs wouldn’t be interpreted in the same way back then as they are now.

However, the folk intent on banning this book are probably upset with Huck’s essentially irreligious out look on life and disregard towards authority.

Maybe audiobook wasn’t the best way to consume this story. I think I would have preferred reading the text, in retrospect. The language was a little hard to palate at times. Read in anticipation of reading James.
