It's one of those books that I was meant to read a long time ago, but only found time now. Friend of mine recommended me the author's books, and I am glad I have given the series a chance, though admirably, I wasn't as drawn to it as much as I thought I would be. Only half-way through the book, I have started enjoying it, with the first part feeling slightly all other the place. However, I have enjoyed getting to know the world described in the book as well as multiple characters, and I can see the potential.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I'm unsure why it's taken me this long to get around to this series. For years now I've been reading about how good it is but I've never picked up a book. More fool me as this book was filled with wonderful characters, a plucky heroine, an interesting murder to solve and a fascination world where magic is shoving technology back into its box. Loved it
Ilona Andrews is one of my favorite authors and the Kate Daniels series is my favorite of all the books that the husband/wife duo write. The writing style is fast paced and engaging and the characters are completely believable despite the fantastical elements that surround all the books. These books are a must read for me and I eagerly devour them and count the months until the next one arrives. I love that despite the occult and romance leanings of these books there is still a generous dose of humor. I highly recommend the Kate Daniels series
My Thoughts: I am so very glad that I brought in the new year with this book. I stayed up much later than I had planned simply because I could not put this book down. This is a series that I've wanted to start for a very long time. The more that I read, the more that I liked Kate. There is a mystery behind her, but meeting her here at this time in her life seems right. She is coming into her own. Sicne she is used to working on her own and hiding who she is, this is going to be a bumpy growing journey. Even more so, because she is aware of the danger that it brings to her. Her strength, the hidden one not the one that is often displayed, is the other thing that I like about her. I didn't like Crest, he appeared too eager in a creepy hidden motive kind of way. But Curran, the Beast lord himself! I liked him and I can't wait to see more interactions between him and Kate. On the one hand it sounds like a good idea, the push each other's buttons a lot. But on the other hand, pushing each other's buttons seems like dangerous territory. We shall see.

Kate Daniels is a investigator trying to live in both the mundane and magical Atlanta. In this world the magic comes on and off like a switch at random intervals and technology may or may not work. This is a world with werewolves and slightly different vampires, vampires are dead that are controlled by Masters of the Dead.
There are deaths happening and they're gruesome, the werewolves and vampires are blaming each other. Kate is drawn into it , because her mentor has been one of the victims, and has to try and save herself and others.
There are times when this suffers from a certain amount of drag and shows a certain amount of new authorship.

This book was different than what I expected. I knew going into it that several of my fave authors are fans of this series, so I went in expecting to really like it. For some reason I had trouble getting into the beginning of it. I can't really tell you what that reason is
I started the second book and had to pry myself away from it to come write this review and date the book as read so I can keep up with my 2008 reading log, but I'm jumping right back into the sequel, Magic Burns, as soon as I hit "save."
I would absolutely reccomend this book to all fans of paranormal, fantasy, and kick butt heroines. :D

I put this down before I had hit the 50-page mark. (And I only got that far because I was reading it on public transit with nothing else to read.)
Not for me, possibly for the reasons Marcia describes.

A few chapters in I thought I couldn't finish this. I know. Shocking, right? I've heard so many good things about this series that my expectations were sky-high, and honestly, the first half was a chore to read. It feels blasphemous to say that but it's the truth.
I couldn't quite put my finger on it at first until I realized my issues with it was: it totally lacked the kind of world building I was used to. I didn't need things to be spelled out to me but I spent the first half of this book trying to decipher who the Order was or what the Guild does. Kate keeps mentioning them but I have no idea what or who they are. At first.
It wasn't until past 50% where I finally got the whole picture of the world in which Kate operates in and I came to enjoy myself immensely.
But even in my confusion with the world building and all that, I was still able to really get into Kate's character. Now, I understand why people rave about her. She is simply phenomenal. I found her totally hilarious. She's stubborn and mouthy and her first instinct is to kill and ask questions later. Her chemistry with Curran was instantly noticeable.
For my romance friends who are interested in this series, I have to say that the romance here is non-existent. This is pure adult UF. Although the seeds are there and knowing that Kate and Curran are on a lot of people's list of OTPs, then I have high hopes for more romance in the next books.
So yes, if you want to read a dense adult UF-adventure type story then I highly recommend this book. I would say that don't expect too much romance. At least not yet.

"Magic Bites" is a funny paranormal mystery. (More emphasis on the mystery rather than the usual paranormal romance.) The main character, Kate, is funny and tough as they come. She is, thankfully, not a runaway Mary Sue, despite these qualities, and the world Andrews has written is interesting.
The downside: The book appears to be setting the stage for future adventures, so some questions are not answered here. Major characters that show promise (like Curran, the King of Beasts) are just starting out here. Last but not least, this book involves a lot of crime, and Andrews doesn't hesitate to describe, graphically, the impact of the crime. This is realistic but it was a bit much for me!
