Didn't really enjoy. I felt there wasn't enough character development. I didn't really care about any of them (apart from Chuck RIP). I understand it is part of a trilogy but I expected a bit more of world building. More clues as to how they got there. I just didn't enjoy the ride of the book.
I didn't really get into this until almost the end, but then I was intrigued enough I definitely want to read more.
LOVED THIS BOOK! LOVED THE SERIES! Such an interesting idea.
I read this one early in the year, when it was hot and I was all over the place and looking for a way to escape. I really just wanted to read the book before I watched the film (yay Dylan O'Brien!), so I zipped through it, but I can see why it's become so popular. Cracking storyline, a good mystery, a protagonist that you root for from the beginning, and just enough mystery to pique your interest and keep you reading - no more. As with Northern Lights, I haven't felt any great pull to read the next book in the trilogy, but I am very much looking forward to The Scorch Trials movie.
I can't decide if I actually enjoyed this book or not. I do know that I would have ended it a lot sooner than the author did. Either way I'm glad I read it before going to see the movie.
I'd rate this much better if it didn't keep shifting between telling the story in present and past verbs. It's story telling 101.
What is confusing is that the writer did a pretty good job in the beginning with conveying Thomas' initial confusion (hah). And then he failed miserably at basic storytelling.

Having finished this book I'm left wondering what the hell did I just read? This book was awful! The characters were flat and there were inconsistencies in the plot line. I still don't understand why the damn maze was created or who made it and that's the only reason I pushed through and finished this book. I kept hoping the book would get better, but it never does! How is this a best seller? The writing style was beyond simplistic and the dialogue just sucked. Ok it was interesting to hear some new slang, I give the author points for that bit of creativity, but really....how did this get published?
Before reading this book, I spoke with both people who loved it and hated it. Now, after reading it, I find that my opinion is somewhere inbetween. The idea was great, although on some fronts really similar to The Hunger Games and Divergent, which made it a little predictable. It was nice reading about Thomas and his friends and the language and characters introduced were light, fun to get to know and interesting. Reading the last few pages, I am definitely curious about what will be happening next; are the 'rescuers' the good guys, or does 'WICKED is good' apply after all? Is there even a good and an evil in here? If the world really has been destroyed by sun flares, is there even a solution?
However, there were some points that really disappointed me about the story. First of all, as I've mentioned before, it was predictable. From the moment Thomas made his promise, I KNEW his friend was gonna die. From the moment Gally started acting weird, I KNEW he would return. From the moment they found the 'hole', I KNEW that would be their escape route. Especially the last one annoyed me a lot, as apparently an entire Glade of intelligent boys, especially selected for their wit, couldn't figure that out while I could. Boys. This brings me to my second point; why were there only boys in the Glade? This might be some key point later on in the story - I certainly hope it will be - but seeing as I've been disappointed before, I'm afraid it'll happen again. Next up, the code words. I'd really hoped there'd be a more sophisticated solution to the Maze issue. Jumping through a hole and punching a keyboard was a bit of an anticlimax, especially because the code words could've meant so much more.
Having said all of this, I must say that I really did like reading this book, and was looking forward to getting back to it whenever I closed it. I'm simply of the opinion that the book could've been better on certain aspects.

contrary to what i feel like everyone else thinks, i found the weird slang to be kind of charming lmao. i thought the idea of the maze was really cool and well thought out and implemented, and most of the ways that the kids reacted to the things that were happening to them seemed pretty on-par with what i think real kids would do in a situation like that.
of course, it's YA. there's a weird love subplot, and its straight, and they have to set up for a sequel. if this was just one selfcontained story about thomas and his surviving in the maze and eventually escaping with some of his friends, i think it would be a lot more compelling. the ending is lackluster and feels pointless. the coolest part of this series is that they're in the maze, and i never bothered to read further because the maze is no longer in the series. wasn't interested.
